Tanner Lee vs POB and Gebbia

So Lee has two years to play. Does he have the goods to start for two years, or will he get passed by or eventually lose the top spot to one of the young guys? This was discussed some time back, but I don't remember. I certainly hope the kid can bring it.

From what little we've heard, I've gathered the impression that Lee will essentially start next year, which basically means he's penciled in for 2, unless POB or Gebbia is clearly better.

POB needs to step up his game over his redshirt season/spring if he wants to beat out Tanner Lee. Hopefully he turns his anger (if true) into motivation.

I'm sure Gebbia is awesome, but that kid looks no heavier than 160. Would love to he him redshirt and gain some weight so he doesn't get killed lol.

What was his anger? Did he or was he told he could be a starter this year? More like did he feel he was guaranteed starting or playing time this year?

Well POB wasn't aware of Tanner Lee when he committed and now he is in for a battle for the starting QB position next season. Also, POB wasn't too happy from reports of him redshirting this season. Langsdorf said POB reaction was "mixed" so I'm assuming he thought that he would be back-up or even pushing Tommy for the job right away. I do like the mix of QB's we will have available next season and hopefully competition brings out the best in all of them.

I'm not sure where people are getting this stuff from. From everything I've seen, he has said all the right things and Langsdorf seems to really like him as well.

That said, I do think Tanner Lee must be a) good enough and b) be told that he has a realistic shot at starting or he wouldn't have transferred here.

What a tough job for coaches when recruiting top players. You practically have to tell them they'll start to stay competitive. Yet in reality, not that many are really ready for the next level.

Lee has been described by Langs as a quick study and picking up the offense quickly. Lee has started quite a few D1 games and seems to have respect from the team while running the scout team. Most recently I read something about Lee going over and helping psych Tommy back into the game when he was on the sideline with cramps against Oregon. It seems to me Lee has the "it" factor and he will be hard for POB to beat out.

Absolutely no way a coach says anything remotely close to promising playing time or starting. It is the most surefire way to lose credibility in your program. I honestly wonder where people come up with this.

They lay out the roster of who is coming up, who is graduating, etc. They are smart enough to know that new talent comes in every year, that is not news.

Assuming you're referencing my post, I said "had a realistic shot at starting" - to me that means he'll have a fair shot to beat off all other QBs. I absolutely agree that there is no promising of starting time or playing time - but I also believe the coaches don't know who will start next year right now. It will likely be an open competition (thus a "realistic shot") and the best man will win.

Sean Callahan has stated on Big Red Wrap-up that the coaches are really impressed with Tanner Lee, but a lot can change in the next year.

If POB improves enough to beat out Tanner Lee he will be one really good player. He has the potential and I like the fact he has some speed in running the ball.

A lot of absurdity in this thread.

1. Tanner Lee is a special talent. When Nebraska faces Wes Lunt on Saturday, they will actually see a downgrade in talent at QB after facing Lee on Scout team.

2. There are rumblings from those in the know that NFL scouts are marveling at Tanner. And he seriously might be a one and done player at Nebraska even though he gained an extra year of eligibility.

3. People criticizing Patrick O'BRIEN after the Spring are full of themselves. The kid should've been a Senior in high school. Word from practice is he has completely turned it on over the last few weeks and his surge has basically removed a kid like Darlington from being an "emergency option" at QB.

The competition next spring will be tremendous.

Gebbia is different from both guys. I expect him to redshirt in 2017 mainly because he needs to put on about 25 pounds.

POB and Gebbia are more athletic than Lee. But Lee is comparable to a Paxton Lynch type QB. He has a big arm, but isn't much of a runner.

I cant remember who it was, but I heard one of the local radio guys say Billy Devaney sees pro-level talent in Lee. FWIW.

I sure hope that's true!
I would love to watch this team get better every year until they are consistently Top 5 or Top 10. Next year would be nice to start that trend!

Not yours specifically but you left out the part of being told. Every kid has a chance or they wouldnt be competing for a spot. Coaches are careful to use language that emphasizes working hard on the field and film room, classroom, weight room, etc and you will have a chance to compete for playing time. To assume a coach promises anything detours the athlete from the hard work they are required to do. Not to mention the obvious tension on a team. Can you imagine a kid talking to reporters about being promised playing time or a position. You just lost your team.

At this point I would not think the coaches have seen enough to really know what they have in these uoung QB's. A good deal of the time they are not even running our offense. These are young kids, they will change mentally and physically over the next year as young teenagers.

Not only does Gebbia need to redshirt, he expects to redshirt and has no problem with it.

Like Cornicator said, some who have seen Lee think there is a chance he is one and done next year.

Man the spring game next year is going to be awesome! Tanner Lee vs. POB... First time in ages I've looked forward to a spring game for something other than a day of football in April.

Yea, but then they'll just give the starting job to a freshman athlete. I've seen these Lee situations before.

Word on the street is that Lee is the real deal. Not the end of the world for the other two though. Developmental time in this system is a good thing. They don't need to be three or four year starters to get their shot at the NFL.

If we want to be an elite program, we need tough competition at every position. If that involves a 4 star or numerous 4 star type players transferring then so be it! I'm sure Bama, The OSU etc. have this happen all the time! We still need a big upgrade in talent at 75 % of the roster if we want to compete for a national championship!

Really like what we're hearing about all of the QBs. Landing Lee was a huge get. Just hope Tommy can stay healthy all season this year.

Thank you for posting ! This is the good thing about players like Tanner being able to transfer. They can leave a situation beyond their control - and go to a true opportunity. Benefits the schools in different ways.
... Though young, POB has gone on the road in HS and thrived in competitions; you can believe he " gets it". You can believe he is good now; but where he is at - he could improve 20% a year ( physically and in his training ): dynomite.
