If you saw it, was not a defenseless player, the runner ( the QB) lowers his head as a full speed DB is coming up to make a tackle.
Had this not been the QB, I don’t think it’s even a question of targeting but a good football play.
Not only has the portal and NIL ruined football but the overuse of targeting calls has as well.

The message, Don't hit anybody in the head. I thought it would be called.

So if you’re running full speed trying to hit the runner in the chest and runner lowers his head at last second, tell me how you react and how it’s even possible ?
I’ll wait.
It’s almost as if some of the officials have never even played football or ANY sport and don’t want to or can’t understand physics.

I can't totally disagree with you, but I did expect that is what the call would be.

May I be permitted to restate this post in one gif?

I think they were trying to focus on the tackler leading with the crown of his helmet as being why it could be targeting. I wouldn’t have called it, and I think the loooong review indicated someone on the call agreed.

Leading with crown of helmet. Keep your facemask at the runner instead of pointed down and it's not getting called. Is what it is.

My biggest issue is that the ball carrier gets a free pass for doing the same thing a dozen times per game. If you are going to hold the defender to that standard, you have to do the same for ball carriers. Hell, you should even hold them to a more strict standard bc they are running downhill and have more control over where they decide to position their head. A defender has to react and can't control where the crown is near as easy as the guy on offense can.

I see your point, but it’s not really a matter of intent. If you lead with crown it’s targeting. For example you may not intend to grab a facemask, but if you do it’s a foul. Agree that ball carrier needs same standard.

See what you hit. If you lower your helmet and make forcible contact with the crown of the helmet, it’s targeting. Been that way for years.

I’m sure the “lowering of the head” for offensive players is taught more nowadays, just to get that call. 15 yards and a reduction in competition for your offense is always a good thing.

I agree with you. I'm not a huge fan of the helmet to helmet unless it's egregious.

Thank the legal climate in America.

"See? You did NOTHING to stop any brain/spinal injuries. Roll the tape on exhibit A-Z as we see blatant, preposterous, egregious, heinous acts of intentional harm by the very game that you promote and profit so greatly from. Yes, you make billions off of career ending injuries such as my client's. You put him in that wheelchair."
