Way too early but it seems and shows we have stepped up.

Playing better on offense and not showing the playbook yet.

Defense is very good.

We still don't have some of our best offensive players at 100%.

Not sure where we wind up but feel we will be competitive against most programs.

VT game is a big test...

1. What was the last time 4 RUTGERS running backs had TDs in a game?

2. ST are better overall, while replacing the best punter in history.
a. JM continues the touchback record pursuit.
b. JP very solid on FG
c. Glad RR fixed the issue from NW game.

3. Receivers playing well considering replacement of top 3 from 2022.

4. Depth is better across the board.

5. All transfer portal guys contributing.

Great post - agree 100%. Our defense is definitely going to keep us in games, as the guys on the B1G show said last night and the offense, while not particularly dynamic, is at least improved, which should also help. And the STs, especially our FG/kickoff kickers are improved.

And there's no doubt Wimsatt is playing better and I think Kirk is playing a big role in that by simplifying the offense. If you notice, we do very little motion and we run most of our plays off of a few sets with options on each, which I believe is helping Gavin "see" the field better and he's executing better than he has. Sure NW and Temple aren't very good, but we're seeing throws from Gavin we rarely saw last year. That bomb to Jackson was a thing of beauty, as was the long out a few plays before that that got called back on the holding. And no INTs in two games, plus his selective running has been somewhat effective.

Sure, Kirk deserves some credit, but Gavin deserves some too for his growth and maturation. But one can see the offense is night and day versus last year. Makes one wonder what exactly Gleeson was doing last year.

I wrote a longer post in a different thread.

But the biggest changes for our offense are;

1. Jackson
2. The TEs demanding LB coverage.
3. GW being intelligent with his throws.
4. GW running the read option well.

At this point teams can not over play the run or the pass against us because we can take advantage of the numbers game.

Next week is massive. Our TEs have to begin to show they can get open in the middle and demand safety coverage OR a second WR needs to step up.

Right now if I had to play us I would outside in press jackson and shade the safety to him. Washington would get 5-7 yard coverage with safety shaded away. Dremel is tough in combo with jackson. You have to man press him with a nickel CB. LBs have to worry about dremel coming in as well as our TEs. I would key on the TEs hard and jam at the line as much as possible.

I would sit in a 2 high press look but also roll to zone read look with 3 high bringing my SS down into the box on the roll at times to let him be free in the middle for TEs and the run. I would pass rush combo our LT every single play with speed.

We have done well but need another WR to step up vertically. Hopefully Long can be that guy.

Compared to offenses in our division , it stinks . That’s the measuring stick.
Great thing is we are only 2 games in and have opportunities to improve

The VT game is very important. I think they have stayed super vanilla the first two games, and they have rested guys that could have played at RB and WR.

We need to open up our RPOs and combo routes for the VT game OR I would also be happy if we could beat VT with a vanilla game plan haha.

That was a good post and so was the other one. Your analysis is superb.

Always thought that we could be decent if we only had a competent passing game. Well now we no longer have to clench our butts when we throw the ball beyond 15 yards. That's a nice start. Just keep it up against better teams.

I still have a couple of complaints about the offense.. though it is remarkably better.

1) Why didn't we use more deception with Wimsatt runs? Consider the 4th quarter.. after Monangai's drive and TD.. we end up back in the red zone and Wimsat just follows RB into the middle of the line. Wouldn't you think a fake to Monangai would bring everyone to stop him while Wimsatt could attack an edge? I don't understand why we seem to avoid deceiving anyone on Wimsatt runs. Still have not seen a true RPO or option with him.

2) While that pass to Brown was close and I'd love to see more of that, why haven't we seen a screen pass? It has probably been over a decade since we have successfully run a screen pass. That may be an exaggeration but not much of one. The screen pass is a way you can slow down rushes which gets the QB time in other situations... time to hit longer passes and longer pass routes.

Look at that.. only 2 complaints.. bonus complaint.. TE seam routes anyone? Keep safeties more honest and away from run support?

Team is playing well and will hopefully get better as the season goes on for once in a long time. That being said I think we are trying to set the fair catch record for kick off and punt returns. Returns have always been a big part of our game. Sucks they are mostly non events.

Everything much improved. Have to give more credit to Harysimiak. This is a top 25 defense. Guys a great coach.

I'm surprised we haven't had Gavin bootleg more where he can be a threat to run. All of his QB runs have been between the tackles. I thought we'd see more 10-20 yard runs from him with him getting in space.

Jackson is a baller. Good shiftiness and nice top end speed as well.
Routes are designed/disguised well as receivers are getting separation.
TE’s have been almost nonexistent in the pass game interestingly.

“Stinks” - maybe a bit harsh.

But we aren’t “mediocre” - to me that means our offense is middle-of-the-road or average. “Below average” is probably accurate. But there are certainly some songs of improvement (we’re our offense was downright PUTRID last year)

Below average is certainly more accurate than putrid or stinks and I think it's not a stretch to say we could get to average - I'd say yesterday was at least average with 36 points 452 total yards and 250+ rushing yards, albeit against a weaker foe.

I think the TEs are kept in for pass blocking.
