Riek is still suspended for the 9 regular season games and the two exhibition games will not count. I'm not a fan of the conspiracy theories but why do the exhibition games count for other players??? The NCAA answer of all cases are decided on their own merits doesn't fly.

If you play for a program we want/need to do well, we work in your best interests. If not, we abuse you to make it look like we act tough.

That's the appropriate question here. In response to it, NCAA spokesman Bob Williams told this blog a day later that</font> <font face="Georgia" size="2">"each case is determined by their merits and these two cases were not the same." Williams added that "no precedent is set for the future."

We are now officially on the hate list of the NCAA, thanks Sidney & Jackson... They will drag this Sidney thing out all year. He will not be cleared unless Jackson takes it to the courts and gets an injunction for Sidney to play.</font>

What exactly does the NCAA have to gain by propping up the giants and stepping on the little guys? If the NCAA does actually derive some benefit from doing this I would like for someone to point this out. I mean, its not like they are a for profit organization.

Personally, it seems like the NCAA is just interested in maintaining the status quo and the easiest way for them to accomplish this is to not come down hard on the big boys and only police the little guys. I understand why the conspiracy theories arise, but its just hard for me believe that they exist.

"theory" part in conspiracy theory. I mean, heck, after years and years of this crap, how much evidence do you need before its no longer a theory. People are either knieve or stupid to think that the NCAA doesn't give preferential treatment to the higher profile programs. I mean from Kevin Fant to Mario Austin to Reik and Sidney, its just the same ridiculous treatment that we've seen for years. Programs like MSU just get royally screwed over and over and then get to come back and say "may I have another?".

That is exactly what they are. Have you ever seen the numbers on that TV contract for March Madness?

And that is why the big programs get the favorable rulings. Teams like UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, etc. have big fan bases that bring in big TV ratings. Therefore, the NCAA wants/needs them to do well in order to continue to drive the market ever higher for the TV deals and make even more money.

Easy example: John Wall. He was cleared at Kentucky with little fanfare and with some pretty damaging evidence that his amateur status had been tainted. Meanwhile, Renardo Sidney hasn't been cleared simply because he is a suspicious case. However, the NCAA has been unable to find anything in an extensive, exhaustive investigation. Now you tell me that if Sidney had gone to UCLA or Kentucky or some other big time program that he would be going through the ringer like he is right now.

Exactly.... Sidney would be cleared if we were UK. I think this thing all goes back to the LA Times article with those "anonymous" sources. Damn you NCAA...

The NCAA is a big business and it does turn a very large profit every year. It does distribute a good bit of money back to the schools, but it hold on a lot of it as well.

Edit to add: Per the NCAA's 2008 audited financial statements, they had net income of $23 million in 2008 and net income of $47 million in 2007. They also had well ove $300 million in investments in both years.
