That inning shows why Holder needs a 3rd pitch. Like a Change.

Doesn't make a lick of sense to me, why Holder hasn't developed a 3rd pitch. At least for show. A circle or 3 finger change is not that hard to master. He'll never make it at the next level without something besides an 86-90 mph fb and a CB.

I'm thinking he comes back for his senior year. He doesn't have a MLB career ahead of him and will be drafted very low.

I hope he does.

And develops that other pitch. It's amazing that he's been able to do what he's done on just the 2 pitches.

Disagree. I don't think he'll be in first 10 rounds. Mlb hitters would punish high 80s and just a slow curve to go with it

Lousy CHs get hit. When he gets to the minors, I'm sure the player dev team will work with him on a CH or another 3rd pitch, where he'll be throwing it in game regardless of whether it gets hit or not. Because in the minor leagues, the coaches and player dev people don't put as much emphasis on W-L. The same can't be said for college ball. Sure, he can work on a pitch during his bullpen sessions, but to really get a feel for it, he has to throw it in game regardless of how lousy it is. If it's 83 and flat he'll get hammered (see Wes Rea against UT).

I thought I saw him throw a cutter to a lefty tonight once. His third pitch is being developed.

You're right. He won't be a high draft pick, but he probably does need to get to the minors and work on developing a 3rd pitch. A mediocre fastball and a nasty curve he has trouble locating wont be enough to get him very far.

I haven't been able to watch the game, only listen. And who knows, perhaps Butch is tinkering a little bit. But traditionally a lot of the development of basically nonexistent secondary stuff comes in the minors. If a guy can feel a CH or some other secondary pitch when he gets to college, then obviously it'll be developed then. But with a guy like Holder is relies on two pitches (with one being an above average hammer curve), he hasn't needed to worry about a third pitch in college because he's been great with just two. Outings like the 9th inning tonight suck to see from him, but it's not like he's had a 17ton in his career. Everyone has a bad outing. I do think he's got closer potential in the pros, but that's reliant on him staying healthy and developing his current two-pitch arsenal as well as at least a "show me" CH

I agree on Holder needed a third pitch, but damn, IF Detz just catches the ball that inning would have been over w/o extra innings.

I believe the record is Krawczyk for Southern Cal with 49. Holder has 37 now so definitely a shot at it if he comes back.
