I think Arkansas is beatable in the second round.

We talked about how awesome that school is. If they make a run to the Sweet 16 their applications will be through the roof. And that's a good thing - High Point is a good look at how universities should be operating right now.

They hired a business guy to run the school a few years back. He came in and transformed the school. Starting recruiting kids of C-suite executives by giving them full scholarships. Donations started coming in. Students who wanted to network started coming in. Changed the culture of the campus by branding it the Life Skills University - big emphasis on Business and STEM degrees and real world experience.

They have a fine dining steakhouse on campus that every student is required to eat at once a semester to learn how to act in business dinner settings. Their recent alums are rock stars at Fortune 500 companies. The campus has been transformed and may be the nicest campus in the country.

I've been on that campus and it is ridiculously nice. Super super expensive too based on which resident package you pick. I do think they have like a 99% acceptance rate or something similar to that.

Yeah, its not remarkably difficult to get into, but its expensive. They are getting a lot of children of executives that want their kids to network with like minded people. There's an argument that a lot of their outcomes-based success is nepo-based, but the counter argument is that their alumni are doing impressive work, so Fortune 100 companies are flocking there to recruit talent.

Take a look at their majors list. Not a lot of barista majors

Wonder how hard it is to get good scholarships? Google says average net cost of attendance is $40-$46k. That's still too much for undergrad if you're not already loaded. I think I'd tell my kids to consider it if they got the cost of attendance down to $20k net. That's still a big bet forcing you to chase high earnings if the alternative is $20k total to do JUCO and then get a degree at MSU.

Basketball rosters:

High Point NIL: $2M

Wisconsin NIL + Rev sharing: $5-7M

High Point is like Southern Miss in baseball. Can do more with less.

Don't remember a High Point discussion- those higher ed threads are usually pretty interesting.

Gonna take a look at the school- I always just viewed High Point as a generic small private ‘holistic’ institution.

They are investing heavily in athletics. They have the nicest non P4 arena in the country and to be honest it’s probably in the middle of the P4.

Yep. Theres a lot of wealthy kids that could not get into Duke or UNC there. Some people dismiss High Point because of that, but its something that should be studied. Higher ed is going to have to adapt. Just as we have discussed non-revenue sports impact on budgets, you have to look at non-revenue academic departments.

It is not uncommon at smaller public and private schools to have more faculty in a department than students. Tenure be damned, schools can't survive like that. A lot has been made by the enrollment cliff - the assumption by researchers in the early to mid 2010s was that it would deeply effect small private colleges. While that has happened, its been more detrimental to small regional public colleges.

Schools like Delta State and West Alabama are in for a world of hurt. Division II is full of schools that are drains on taxpayers. I think the future of college athletics probably looks a lot like this.

Division I-A (Power 4+)
Division I-AA (Group of 5 and most FCS)
Division I-AAA (non scholarship football + Division I other sports)
Division II-A (scholarship football)
Division II-AA (non-scholarship football)
Division III public (non-scholarship all sports)
Division III private (non-scholarship all sports)

As someone that worked at High Point, I have a very different view of the university than those that are raving about it on here. I have worked at several different universities and it was easily my worst experience. As a student, it would have been amazing but as a place of employment it was awful.

That said, I love the AD they have now. Really good guy and glad to see him doing well.

Much like parks, city and state recreational services, the post office, and police...educational institutions do not exist to turn a profit.
These all exist to enhance society in various ways. They are services.

While it is irresponsible for any to spend money well beyond what is determined 'reasonable', it is insane to view them as needing to be profit generators or even to pay for their own existence.

Athletics and other activities ad D2 schools dont need to turn a profit to be worthwhile.

Isn't State something pushing $30K for out of state students, tuition only, with food and housing on top of that?

Going to college these days is ridiculously expensive, and it's not even tax deductible. I paid my expenses with money from being a co-op student. Not sure how students/parents do it without significant scholarships.

Not really sure but you’d have to be in a really ****** State to not have a better option than paying full freight as an out of state student at msu.
