So a colleague lent me The Blind Side and after getting her assurances that it isn't overly pro-Ole Miss, I've read it. In the Egg Bowl chapter, on the 2005 game, the author (Michael Lewis) states:

"It had been several years, for that matter, since Mississippi State had beaten any other team in the SEC."

In 2004, the year before, we beat Kentucky and Florida. In 2003, Vanderbilt. In 2002, we did go 0-8.

Please note that I am suggesting no conspiracy. Just kind of curious how a blatantly wrong fact like that slipped in.

I have not seen Oher's opinion or reaction to the movie. Does anyone know if he thought it was factual?

Disclaimer: I have not seen "The Blind Side" and would rather watch a Barbara Streisand movie marathon than watch it.

That Oher said he didn't like how the movie made it seem like Sandra Bullock's character taught him how to play football because he'd been playing for years. Of course, it's just Hollywoodization.

I do remember a good bit of discussion about your SEC West losing streak, so I tend to lean toward Lewis misinterpreting that fact.

You went from the Egg Bowl in 2001 to the Egg Bowl in 2005 without beating a West team. So the 2005 Egg Bowl snapped a 19 game SEC West losing streak.

He didnt like how the movie portrayed him having to be taught how to play by the lady and/or at that age.

Bruiser, it doesn't really matter what he meant to write. The fact as written and published is wrong, and that fact alone is the problem. Regardless, there was a lack of care taken to make sure the facts were correct.

Agree. Just stating how I assume the fact got mixed up.

... & have no desire to see movie or read book.

Here's what grinds my gears: I guess it was impossible for somebody to hack out an Ole Miss romance novel without mentioning Miss. State.

Miss. State just had to be mentioned in the book, didn't it? And on top of that, a lie was told about Miss. State by the "author." (I put "author" in quotes because I am 99.9% sure the book was ghost written).

Dear next rag to riches Ole Miss jock who want to cash in on an embellished tale of contrived heroism: Please, for the sake of Pete, please leave any mention of Miss. State out of your book. Go with your real rival, LSU. Just leave us alone.

I watched the movie. Like most movies of true-stories it was probably severely embellished. I will say it may have helped ppl outside of the south realize that never everyone down here is a blatant racist. Then the Rebels had to go and host a kkk rally on their campus and ruined all of the good pub. And have you guys ever realized that Oher, when introduced in an NFL game-you know the part where they say their name and college, he always says "south memphis" and not "ole miss" leading me to believe that he doesn't hold very fond memories of that place if he doesn't want to claim them.

8-24 in the SEC while Oher was there? Or that Oher was 2-2 vs MSU?

P.S. To keep anyone from having to look it up, State also went 8-24 in the SEC during those 4 years.

P.S.S. The book did show that the Tuohys didn't take Oher in on a permanent basis until after his 1st team Tennessee All-State season and being named the #1 OL recruit in the country by Tom Lemming.

"When asked about being forced to watch the story of his own life, Oher said he didn't remember his formative years being so emotionally overwrought and rife with clichés"

quote from oher in this article given by mutt.

but then somebody gave me the book for Christmas. I read it and sure enough the writer had to put down MSU. Not only did he refer to our losing record the previous years but, he talked about our "old and rickety stadium" with the "cold bare concrete floors" and "wooden cubby holes for lockers". I doubt this guy has ever been to State but, he sure enough lied about it. Only good thing he mentioned was when he quoted Touhey as telling Oher to make sure he checked out our turf.
