The bottom line on all this logo stuff...

....is that our previous AD just made a bad decision in the name of "gasp" saving money and trying to create a universal "identity." And while I understand his line of thinking, at the end of the day, we are left with football uniforms and logos that most people just don't like. His desire to have one logo that spanned across all sports is somewhat understandable, but completely unnecessary. Many on here have posted that Polk blocked the M-State logo going on the baseball caps and unis, but that LT originally wanted that. Nobody in the SEC has the same logo across the three sports, except for maybe Tennessee. It hasn't hurt Alabama to have three different logos, and it wasn't hurting us. Schools are identified by their colors and initials.

In reality, having one logo hasn't brought us one more recruit or gotten us anymore exposure or national notoriety than we had before. I am sure Russell is cheaper to work with than Nike, but all it has done is annoy the hell out of most football fans, and if anything, hurt in recruiting slightly.

In summary, unnecessary idea. Good intentions. Bad execution, and we're stuck.

how Nike can hold the initials MSU arranged in a certain way hostage from you. I would try to buy that thing back before spending any reall money on creating a new one.

The terms of our agreement with them were that Nike would retain the trademark rights for any logos they designed (thanks Larry for not insisting at the beginning that we share trademark rights for any logo Nike designed for US). I doubt they would sell that logo to us without us ditching Russell and going back to Nike. Which personally, I'd much rather be with Nike than Russell anyway, although my first choice would be Addidas.

...to go find the trademark registration for the 1996-2003 MSU helmet logo. I've tried and cannot find it.

Because it is Friday.......

I don't think it was a bad idea to try and market an universal logo. I am not aware if we had one previously....unless it was the script Mississippi State or walking Bulldog. But Bama, UF, and LSU have come out with new universal logos within the past 10 years.

I have no idea why we split with nike. I imagine it is because..... The jersey we were still wearing in 2003 was produced in 1996 by nike for a number of schools. I am pretty sure we were the last ones wearing that nike design. Maybe they told us they could no longer produce that jersey and offered us a new contract less than what addidas offered.

Whatever happened, I think our jerseys today look much better than the nike jersey. The black shadow numbers, black stripes, and small font Miss State looked bad. I like the plain but classic look. The problem with the uniform today is simply the white helmet. The white helmet just looks terrible. If we had a maroon helmet, no matter what the logo.... MSJ, nike MSU, or MState, that would greatly....VASTLY.. improve the current uniform.

b/w those schools and what we did the last time we intro'd a universal logo (M-state) is that we've tried to force it everywhere--helmets, baseball, etc. Those schools haven't. Arkansas also came out with one around the time LSU did. They may have used the same co.

But now that you mention it, that whole story could very well just be a smokescreen Templeton put out there to justify changing the football logo to his beloved M-State logo. I do know that you can search for the old MSJ logo we used and find that we do own the trademark for that logo. Someone linked to it a year or so ago.

...it's fine for M-State to represent our university. I always thought it looked great for basketball. Just don't force it on the football helmets, and don't try to force it on baseball. Essentially, we had it right before we changed it, in my opinion.

But it damn sure doesn't need to be anywhere near our baseball caps or football helmets. You're right that we had it right before Templeton forced the change. And as others have pointed out, most schools have different logos for football, basketball, and baseball.

Yeah, I liked three logos for the big three as well. Kinda gave each their own identity.

...I am sure it was the cheap way out.

Now, I agree that it really doesn't make that much of a difference, but it is just annoying, and it's a little way to energize the fan base.
