Al Golden HAS to be the top candidate if GS passes on RU. Consider that he:
-Built a perennial loser program up to respectability (went 9-3 and 8-4 in his last two years at Temple)
-Won in the midst of turmoil (32-25 at Miami while it was hit with Shapiro related sanctions). The team was ranked as high as #7 in 2013.
-Obviously knows NJ and is a known quantity to HS coaches around here
-He can recruit. How does 6 or more 4 star recruits in 2014, 2015 and 2016 sound?
-He understands BiG culture; being a former PSU player
-has no known personal scandals. Don't underestimate this as a top priority with Hobbs (which is why I don't think Fleck gets a strong look)
-Will probably accept the RU job if offered (he needs a job and Mrs Golden won't pull a Mrs Christobal since she's from Pennsylvania).

"Will probably accept the job" - vs. calling games on Fox Sport 3 next year?

Here's the best case for Golden:

Too harsh? [laughing]

Do you also want his Defensive Coordinator as well? You thought Rutgers defense was too passive, D'Onfrio has STUD ATHLETES in Miami play read and react zone with 10 yard cushions. Instead letting D'Onfrio go, he kept him which led to his firing.

No thanks. I'd take the 67 year old over Golden.

There is no case to be made for Golden. Pray for Mark Richt.

Only way we should take Al is if he can get Matt Rhule to come along and coach the D; then we would have the Golden Rhule. Otherwise, no way.

How does 4 star recruits playing like massive underachievers sound? Despite all that talent, his record wasn't much better than Flood's.

Dare to want better than Mario or Al.
Barchi said finances won't be a problem, why settle for less like RU would be doing with those two.

something about a message board poster (true story) saying that Fleck slept with one of the boosters wife
Well when it came time to prove it, that "true story" was retracted.
Just message board BS about PJ sleeping around
I don't think Fleck would be a HR hire, but don't want anyone not wanting him because of BS posted on a message board.

Golden is tarnished. He was getting beat on the reg @ Miami in a watered down conference in a watered down division.

He is horrible. Jason Whitlock wrote an article at the time of his hiring about how much smoke and mirrors the guy was. It all turned out to be true. His research into Golden's Temple wins on point. He astutely recognized that Temple, upon entering the MAC, had the highest budget of any school. And he still didn't win the conference. In fact, he never beat 1 team with a winning record in the MAC.

Golden is a sweaty car salesman who used to speak ill of Rutgers, and now he wants the job because no one else cares enough to call him.

He would be a massive mistake, and firing Flood to go through all of this, only to fire that dud would be an epic fail.

It takes a special kind of moron to walk into Miami, with all of their speed and talent, and move from an attacking aggressive defense, to a Penn St. 80's read and react defense.

Coach Sweat is a dumb meathead.

Especially when they are complete failures as a coach, and people want to hire them to coach the team I care about.

Keep Flood in that scenario.

He was already at Miami. He'd have no problem leaving us, while probably using his office at the Hale Center to recruit players for his new job.

You can't not hire someone because you think they might move to a 'bigger' job. If they're able to do that they've been successful and you've made a good hire.

That said, I don't want Golden.

I remember the rumors circling through section of the RAC that I sit in during the Howard basketball game. First there was the rumor that Flood was getting fired which had a bunch of people excited...only to have the air let out of the balloon by the Al Golden rumor.
