The Difference Between Mitchell and Quaintance

First, we (me) are talking about Mitchell but he hasn’t announced. But, assuming he announces he’s a Cat over the weekend, I can’t help but think about JQ. We may never see Mitchell in a UK uniform (because of NCAA) and not see the full team.

But, here are the biggest differences to me.

- It’s not Mitchell or bust. We have N’Diaye and McBride. Hawthorne, and Kam can play the position in some situations. Momcilovic can slide over. Mitchell is a scoring machine and allows others to play their more natural position.
- I’d rather take a flyer on a NCAA -vs- Court ruling than big man injury rehab. NCAA may win in the end, but they have a losing record. Big men rehab slowly-especially knees.
- The loss of JQ left us very thin. Garrison never progressed and Moreno still had freshman strength.

I want Mitchell. He’ll take UK to the next level. But, the well is not empty if he doesn’t play. Regardless of what happens, I’d rather take a flyer on Mitchell than an injured player. This is certainly not a shot at JQ. I think he tried to play and had a legitimate physical setback evidenced by another surgery. Most basketball players simply don’t recover from ACL’s that quickly.

Im guessing there will be lots of drama around this situation over the next couple of weeks. I hope NCAA surrenders when the first player on a TRO plays a football game.

Here's one tiny difference that would be easy to overlook, but I think could prove surprisingly significant:

Mark Mitchell has two working legs.

That's on the day that he signs, if he does: Not, "Lets sign him and hope he has two working legs at some point in the coming year,” which was the plan with Quaintance.

“Mark Mitchell has two working legs.”

Some say three.

Is he limping?

Mitchell will have the same problem as JQ, Mark Pope coaching him.

Imo this is true based solely on Pope's inability to manage egos. Last year that literally tanked our season. Ya our roster was way overrated but plenty good enough to not get blown out on a regular basis.

Lets hope he made some changes to his approach, because he just added a big money, big minutes guy to a front line that thought they knew their role. That would test even the best manager, and Pope is far from even being good in that department.

Unfortunately, we don't know yet how the SEC will handle this transfer.
I’m guessing all of the football players playing under similar TRO’s will be a much bigger talking point. Players who played NFL preseason games in the last week are now suiting back up on SEC teams!!!!

Othen Milans shooting. Mitchell is likely our second best player. Just not sold on others . Team is looking a little better but honestly we had better start of season rosters the last 2 years at least on paper. I keep hearing how this roster is so much better I keep looking at it piece by piece and it doesnt add up

I believe we need Mitchell to be a contender. I do not see Kam or Hawthorne as SEC caliber players. N’Diaye and McBride are unproven at this level.

I think it's a fringe T25 team w/o Mitchell. They could be T15ish consistently or maybe slightly higher if all the questions marks pan out. Or they could be 25-40 type if there are a lot of misses in that group. Mitchell seriously raises that ceiling to a legit T5-10 team, IMHO.

Mark Mitchell doesn't have an ego problem. Furthest thing from it actually. Completely unselfish player.

Agreed. There are a lot of question marks. Kam's health and ability to contribute consistently at this level. B. Hawthorne, N'Diaye, McBride, and Wilkins would all be guys unproven at this level that are being counted on for significant contributions (w/o Mitchell on the roster). If they all pan out, it could be potentially very good. If they don't, it won't be pretty. If some do and some don't, it's probably a lot like the last two seasons.

I think our starting 5 is an upgrade over last year, maybe not individually but as a group. Really excited to watch Zoom, Wilkins, Noah,Milan, and Moreno play. Our bench scares me alot though because of the huge talent drop off and we all know Pope is gonna sub them in 4 minutes into the game.

He isn't the only person in that equation. He's the late add. He's the least effected. Its everyone else that has to move over that will need their ego managed. Last year pope proved that is not his strength.
I don't disagree, but if the guys that are moving down a spot (N'Diaye, McBride, Kam, B Hawthorne) because of a Mitchell add have an ego about it they can kick rocks. None of those dudes have anything to be egotistical about. They are question marks at the absolute best at this level.

Your mom has about as good of a chance of being a starter as Trent Noah does. Lol. Sneaking him in there gave me a good chuckle.

Can you imagine a 3/4 combo of Noah and Mom trying to defend SEC forwards? Good lordy.

I think roster this has more talent than first team and more chemistry than last year.

Agree 100% that he makes us much better. Just saying the cubbard is not bare.

We had one PG last year and we saw what happened without that one player.

The NCAA has been gelded. It has practically no power anymore. If a school stands up to them they wilt.
I think there is less than 50% chance Mitchell plays for UK. There are a handful of schools vying for the services of these ineligible seniors. The other schools don’t want it. The NCAA has some backing here from member institutions. And, it seems to be winning above the trial court level when it comes to the injunctions. I have seen no sign that it intends to fold. Is it waiting for a legislative fix? IDK. But it appears to have some fire for this issue.

I think the overall shooting of this team will make them top 12-15 as constructed, and higher with Mitchell.

My bigger point is that I’d much rather take a flier on a situation like this than an injured player. Pope needed another PG last year and knew it. He should’ve gone after an international PG, then fought with NCAA. (Granted, Barnhart may not have supported that move.)
