I, like many others on this board, wanted Rettig from the start. But after seeing the performance Laviano had these last two games, I like what I see. He's better than Teel was during the 2006 (his So year) season. After Laviano, we have an Elite 11 QB in Russo coming in. That means we have solid QB play through 2020.

We have some great linebackers coming in, great depth at RB, and developing a B1G caliber OL. If we can fix the nonsense in the secondary with recruiting, I don't see why we can't compete with the best in B1G East week in and week out.

I am not sold we will ever get a big bump in recruiting in NJ. We don't have the money to hire a big time coach so that strategy is out. The up and coming coaches may cut either way where even if we got a shot short term in recruiting, it would disappear as soon as that hot up and coming coach left. NJ has no real identity. It is a suburb of NY or Philly. Jersey kids know that and want to get away to where it can have a spotlight shined on them. All the big name destinations provide that. We will get the occasional 4 stars like Davis, Carroo (he may have been a three star) and Ford. Even Schiano could not regularly pull them in after 10 plus years and the Huggins and Hamilton's of NJ only came after 10 years of Schiano here. Best Flood may get are 3 stars. Frankly, I don't give a crap any longer if they are from NJ or not. I just want kids who can ball no matter where they are from. Some of our potential emerging stars --- Martin, Hicks, Austin, Wharton, Joseph, Grant --- are not even from NJ. There is a lot of talent out there. It'll take a lot more work than have the NJ kids commit here, but if they can ball and want to play here, I am fine with that.

It has nothing to do with "wanting to have the spotlight shined on them".
It's all about them hostesses.[banana][banana][banana][banana][banana]

Actually, the 4 stars that RU has signed over the years have been a mixed bag. About 30 - 40% of them have become good or really good players. There are many very solid college football programs that have been built on targeting and signing the right 3 star players. Virginia Tech and Michigan State come to mind. In the end, its about how the team plays and competes on the field, not where the players were ranked coming out of HS, it's pretty much a crapshoot on that anyway.

Thirty to forty percent hit rate on four stars is probably about the norm actually.

Your right on a lot of what you said. I feel there would have been a way better bump in recruiting by now though, with the B1G and all.

Well according to experts, there kind of has been a bump, although not a massive one. Most of the guys we have coming in are more Big Ten sized and almost all of them have offers from respectable P5 schools... which may not seem like much but is an improvement over recent years. Should pay some dividends.

We have most of the pieces in place now we need the OC and coach Flood to put the puzzle together.

There is a real nucleus of talent on the team that could really make was in the big ten in years to come. I believe that whenever they get that signature win against an elite team it will buy them instant credibility with young NJ HS top talent. That's what's lacking -- so why not start this saturday versus OSU.. The Michigan game was a start last year but it wasn't enough.
