MA will continue to be strong in their conference
MA will continue to not do so well outside the conference.

The Mt Airy football program has tremendous tradition. The city school system provides great financial support( meaning their facilities and coaching salaries are much better than other 1-A programs). They have a knowledgeable and experienced staff. They have athletes and will challenge for the state 1-A title THIS year!!!!

Mt Airy JV is up only 30 to 0 over Starmount and most likely will remain undefeated on the season. Not sure how we will do the next couple of years playing these undefeated 9th and 10th graders as they move up a year to go along with the undefeated 10th and 11th graders on the varsity.
Buzzcoach, help me out here, what are these MT Airy haters seeing that we are seeing?

As strong as MA has been or is this year, moving forward, I would like to see Adkins and company venture out and play some bigger, more athletic teams. Maybe travel to Charlotte or even play a school from Catawba County, Lincoln, or Gaston. Not sure if they are required to play certain teams nonconference, but if not, would love to see them compete, and beat, a competitive schedule. Good luck rest of the year and I think they may win this year.

With logistics the way they are, price of fuel and expenses it is hard to travel a lot. MA has always tried to play the other teams in county. Some are good rivalry and good gates. After ES canceled they had to go looking on short notice. When EW postponed they were looking hard for a quality opponent but reaches an agreement to reschedule. In the past they have had deals with Thomasville, Monroe, and Reidsville. Two years ago I think they went to Mayodan. This year they picked up 3a Ashe County. The in county schools are all 2a. Some years are better than others.

Back when Charlie Love was the Coach at North Iredell and they were ranked in top 10 of state 3A, Mt Airy entered a 4 year contract with them, Hollinsworth led Mt Airy to a 2 and 2 split with them. This was 20 plus years ago.

MA in 70s and early 80s was a 2A school buy always petitioned to play up in 3A. If would stayed down prob would won more state titles who knows. They were very good in 3A at a time when you had to win conf just to get in. Made it to 3 Rd and 4th Rd alot.

MA us a good program for sure but how many other teams would have that many wins if they had been playing football for 115 years like Mt airy?
I look more at win percentage and or state titles.

Bears are celebrating 100 consecutive years of Football this year; 1st game was actually in 1915 but then there was like a 6 year gap u til they started playing for good….it’s interesting to see who they’ve played over the years….Charlotte area, Greensboro & Winston Salem were common opponents….High Point area also…just looking at the all-time records the one series that stands out is Reidsville; good games but just never could beat them enough…

When Coach Alex Gibbs was at Mt Airy in the late 1960’s the conference was Mount Airy, Mount Tabor, High Point Andrews, Madison Mayodan, Morehead, and Reidsville. East Surry was not a real rival until Coach Diamont left MA as an assistant and went to East Surry in the late 1970’s. North Surry had always been MA’s top rival!
