Blondy was a heck of a man. I knew him briefly in the 80's and he was hobbled from playing ball. I had no idea at the time how good he was. I had just become a state fan after the Bama victory and he just looked like a tired, worn out old man to me-not a former SEC superstar. He was super nice and wish I would have been more aware of what he had accomplished.

Harold "Bird Dog" Grove, one of the men I quoted in this column, was a great friend and became my go-to guy for all Mississippi State football history once Bob Hartley passed away. He was, as my dad would say, a good' un.
