but Rick Ray is now our head coach. He is undefeated as State's head coach. He has a few years to see what he can do and it just boils down to wins.

Let's all have drink in honor of Rick Ray. From afar, we will probably need more while watching bulldog basketball for a few years.

a coach being interviewed and how everyone just wanted to offer the job on the spot. They were blown away, etc. Could have sworn it started over on 24/7.

If true and I'm not completely making that up, I'm hoping that interview/meeting was Rick Ray.

Just looking for something here to make me feel optimistic right now.

Edited to add: Could this have been Rick Ray?? Read the thread again here

if you take the thread at face value

from MW at the junction (59min ago): paraphrasing
don't think his team is playing in the ncaat
once they got to the guy they really liked... they stopped right there and made an offer.
still a couple of people on the list just in case it doesn't work out

he could be wrong, but from what he has put together ...state has their guy, it just has to play out

update (41min ago)
he doesn't think it is someone that has been discussed on his site
...he hasn't nailed down exactly who it is, yet

again...just trying to make myself feel better that maybe we really did find someone before others discovered him.

I was so sick of the mediocrity that I wanted us to roll the dice and try to break the cycle. Hopefully it'll work... but obviously we'll need 3 or 4 years to really see if it does.

but it was time for Stans to go and no hindsight will change my opinion on that

A part of me kind of likes the hire because let's face it-- there's been a bit of malaise surrounding the basketball program the past few seasons and having someone outside MSU would be a good thing.

One thing I like a lot about Ray -- and in a sense it reminds me of Sherrill in this regard-- he's been coaching at the so-called non-flagship state universities. Before he was at Clemson, he coached at Purdue and Indiana State. So I have the idea that he gets the in-state rivalry and that we tend to do well against Ole Miss.

One thing I like about Stricklin's hire: Goodman from CBS apparently said it was a great outside the box hire. It's outside the box because he is an assistant from a university like MSU so he gets the culture I would hope.

One thing I am concerned about Ray: his lack of southern exposure and nonfamiliarity with the SEC; however, that could be good.

Another thing that concerns me: 57strat commented in another thread that instead of hiring Payne we hired the guy who was going to be his X & O's assistant. Now I don't know if that's even close to being true (I would say unlikely almost automatically but the fact that Hudspeth was interviewed for head coach when Mullen got the position and Hudspeth later became Mullen's assistant kind of makes me think that there might be something resembling the truth there).

I think the chances of someone from Stansbury's staff being retained as an assistant have increased. We will see how Ray does.

It was time. I wish the job had been a bit more desirable to outsiders but that apparently wasn't the case.

The question you have to ask is: If Stans had been allowed another year, could the hire next year have been worse?

Sadly, I don't really know yet until we see what this guy can do. But there are some serious question marks. I am thinking we waited a little too late with Rick and the RSS incidents/media attention have made us snake bit.

Why was everyone so high on him? He was by all accounts the third best assistant on that team. And saying he is a phenomenal recruiter is like saying Alabama's Tight Ends coach is a superb recruiter. Players don't go to Kentucky for Payne and the don't go to Alabama because of the TE coach. Calipari and Saban are the reasons they go to those schools. I could get 5 star players to go to Kentucky for basketball.

I'm just sitting still, staring at my screen, wondering how this happened when it did.
If he was our guy, we should've had him in place by the weekend after we let Stans go. There was nothing to keep him busy.
Also, if he's supposed to be a hot shot recruiter, it sure as heck isn't showing in Clemson's classes. Check out 2010, 2011, and 2012 for them as rated on 24/7and try not to wince.

it would have made even more sense to have him in place sooner (i.e., your points make even more sense when combined).

It's pretty clear we got the person that we could get, not the guy we badly wanted to get. I'm still behind him but damn it's a strange to hire a guy that most of us had never heard of and who wasn't even at a school that went to the tournament this year.

there are 26 5-stars this year and many more 4 stars and whether you want to admit it or not the AAU Underworld controls the destination of most of these players. Is Coach Ray plugged into the system? Currently Clemson has five commits, all 3 stars. Last season they managed one 4 star whose other offers were Va Tech Virginia and Penn State.

Doesn't look to me that he has the skills to bring in the players needed to compete at a high level whereas Payne had this access. Devonta is gone and if others follow suit we could be looking at a 13-16 win season at BEST. This is why I am not happy with this hire

He seemed like he would be the answer to this years recruiting problems, but that was about as long-term as it got. He's never struck me as the assistant behind the scenes at Kentucky that designs the offense and defense and works with players to understand the offense and defense... that is all Calipari, and it doesn't take a search committee to point that out. Kentucky is running the SAME EXACT offense and defense Memphis ran when he was there... and that had me concerned. Can't say that about the Mullen hire (some may say apples to oranges... but look at this on a macro scale.. UF's offense never recovered after Mullen left and many players said he was the mastermind behind Meyer in terms of offense). Keeping that in mind, I think that is what Stricklin saw in Ray, and I think that is the reason he went with Ray over Payne. I am certainly ok with that.

another year of Stansbury. I just plain would not have watched or followed another season with him running things.

Will this guy be any better? The answer to me is yes, simply because it is a different direction from where we were headed.

This guy gets some time and is our coach. We all knew next year was going to be rough regardless of who we brought on so next year is simple. Put 5 guys on the floor that play with heart and effort. That to me is a win at this point. Will that happen? We will all have to wait and see.

(minus the RSS obviously), I will be ok. With the exception of UK and Florida, most SEC schools average those kind of classes, so if he can get 3 star and the occasional 4/5 star recruit and make them bust their *** on offense, defense, rebounding, and transition, we will be competitive. <div>

It wasn't like Scott knew he was the guy from the beginning. Scott actually did a coaching search, and he sat down with a lot of different candidates. I'm not saying we never got turned down by anyone, but he interviewed a lot of people and decided on who he wanted. It would be very irresponsible for an AD to go after 1 guy, interview 1 guy and then offer him. I'm very glad yall arent the AD. Give Ray a chance at least. He may be terrible, but he also could turn into a gem. No one knows at this point, so quit freaking out
