You're right - based on the highlight reel, Copeland shoots 100% from the field and he blocked one layup from behind - a clear indication of great shot-blocking ability.
But seriously - based on the Georgetown games I watched, Copeland is a good player and will be a solid addition. He's a much better perimeter player than either Morrow or Jacobson, but won't rebound as well as either of them. Their departure will force Copeland into more of a power forward role, for which he's not as well suited as the role he would have been playing with Morrow. Jacobson and Tschimanga all on the team.
Totally different style of play. Morrow is a Banger, Rebounder and Defensive presence. Copeland is more of an Offensive Player who can shoot and run, very athletic. The Kansas coaches kicked the tires on Copeland when he annpunced he was transferring and viewed him as more of a Big 3 or Stretch 4. Not an inside banger or rebounder, more of a slasher and spot jumper kinda player. Nice offensive player. Assuming we have anyone else to play in the paint I would think he would be playing away from the basket a little bit with a big like Jordy manning the paint. The Kansas coaches had some concern about his back injury because a Herniated Disk is a pretty serious injury that requires a major surgery. No guarantee he will have the bounce in his step that he had before the injury. If he does come back to close to 100% we will have a serious offensive weapon on our team if properly utilized.
Damn, I never thought of this approach. Get a new car and take care of our coaching 'problem' all in one sweet stroke.
This is why I said Copeland is probably a little pissed right now. Story of the Miles tenure (and Nebraska basketball as a whole), guys have to play out of position. However great of a player he becomes for Nebraska, he likely would be better with Morrow and Jacobsen on roster.
And this is compounded by the fact that the training wheels remained firmly on Tschimanga all the way through the end of last season, instead of getting him ready to play more minutes. I like Tschimanga, but I don't see him suddenly leaping from 12 minutes per game to 30.
I think Miles would be better off running a perimeter based offense with
Watson/transfer (or one of the other 3 guards spelling him)
Gill/Taylor/Palmer
Roby/Akenten
Copeland/McVeigh
Tshimanga/Borchardt or transfer

I think Jordy progressed quite nicely last season from a very raw prospect to one who contributed down the stretch. I know it's trendy to bash everything Miles did last year, but I don't think how he brought along Jordy should be part of that bashing. A) He wasn't able to play many more minutes most of the season because he fouled a lot, B) Quite possibly early in the season he was mostly lost on the floor and didn't earn minutes until later on - and his development may have been because of the slow build of minutes.
I think Jordy will still be in development form this next season, but if he grows even half as quickly as he did last year, by the end of next year, he could really turn into a pretty productive player. If he sticks around all four years, he could actually build himself into a force.
Yes and the only possible reason for my observations is that I want to be trendy and bash poor Tim Miles. It couldn't have anything to do with what I saw with my own two eyes.
There were games in which Tschimanga couldn't play more because he was in foul trouble, and there were games in which he didn't play more because he was just plain terrible. But there were also games that offered perfect opportunities for him to get more minutes and he did not - the best examples being a lopsided home win over Penn State and the blowout loss to Michigan, which were arguably Tschimanga's best performances of the season.
If you don't agree that he should have played more in these games, I'm certainly open to hearing the reasons why. They seemed like excellent growth and development opportunities to me, but then my view of the games was probably tainted by my sinister agenda.
Transfering would help his case. Too soon?
Sorry if my post suggested you had a sinister agenda. That wasn't my intent. I was trying to suggest that it's very popular to bash Miles now (for everyone) but I was willing to recognize where a player developed nicely during the season. I don't think many people who watched this team could say that his development wasn't short of remarkable. So sure, could he have played more in the games you suggested? Sure. Do I think that is going to alter whether he's ready to contribute more minutes next season? Probably not.
He isn't going to make an NBA roster regardless of where he finishes his college career. Creighton had that big Venezuelan, Echenique? Who Jordy reminds me of quite a bit and he never even sniffed the NBA.
If Borchardt is playing significant minutes next year, it's going to be a very long season
He made tremendous strides in his game under Miles last year largely due to coaching and the design of our offense. It's not so good for somebody like Ed and Jacobsen because they can't hold their position and score over B1G bigs but its great for Jordy. Jordy learned and executed some really good low post moves by the end of the season.
On an NBA roster and playing in the NBA are 2 totally different things.
The NBA is moving away from traditional 5s. Is there even a starting center in the league that has to rely exclusively on a low post game? Caleb Swanigan was a beast for most of the B1G season, won B1G POY and 1st team All American, yet he will be at best an early second round pick.
I don't see Jordy reaching anywhere near where Swanigan is.

There are still teams that like to play with a big powerful guy and you just about have to have a true center on your roster for matchup purposes if for nothing else. Notice, I didn't say he was going to be a starter. I said he was going to be on somebody's roster. He showed me he can face up and shoot it a little bit and his post moves got immensely better. If he continues to improve his shooting, he'll find a home. The kid from Gonzaga is going to be drafted and he is going to play somewhere. IF I were starting over from scratch and picked in order the guys I wanted from our team, it would be Roby 1 and Jordy 2.
I like Tschimanga and I'm excited about his potential. I recognize that he improved his game over the past year, but forgive me if I didn't find that progress remarkable. I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have made similar strides at just about any Power 5 program that chose not to redshirt him, but perhaps I'm underestimating NU's player development prowess - which is evidently the best-kept secret in all of college sports.
Geezus give it a rest will you. I didn't say Miles was a miracle worker. I said that they helped Jordy immensely this year so give him and his staff some credit for evidently doing something right.
And all I'm saying - much like Tuco's assessment above - is that Tschimanga's progress over the past year was about what I would have expected from a raw, athletic big man after a year of college basketball. I wasn't disappointed by his progress, nor did I find it remarkable or immense. Is that opinion allowed, or should I raise my hand and ask your permission to speak next time?
Most raw big men I have seen have not remotely come close to his improvement in year one.
You telling someone else to give it a rest is rich. You have spent numerous posts trying to convince us how bad Ed Morrow is and how he won't be a loss to this team and try to beat down anyone who doesn't agree with you.
BullSh##. I never once said he was "BAD" so quit making things up. Just like your brethren making crap up about what I posted. I pointed out his strengths AND his shortcomings and said that I hated losing him and that we would miss him. I also said that I think he's delusional if he thinks he's going to play in the NBA. NOT ONCE did I say he was bad. I can just sit here and let people make stuff up about what I supposely posted about a player or I can reply. Which would you do? Ed is a good but not great player. We needed him to stay. As far as me trying to "beat down" anybody that doesn't agree with me goes, it's one against about 8 and I've been called a "dumb f#####" and an fu##### idiot to name a few. Every time someone dares mention that Morrow is a big loss, you do everything you can to tear him down. Show me where you have been called those things and I will take care of it.
Somebody eventually deleted some of the posts. That's not exactly how this played out. When someone called him "the best player" on the team I correctly pointed out why in fact he isn't. I have posted multiple times that we would miss him. I also pointed out why he almost has to play the 5 given his skill set. Those are just facts. Call it tearing him down if you like. Apparently Ed is a basketball God and no questioning of his abilities is allowed. I did not attack Ed for leaving. I did not question his effort. I questioned his wisdom. I liked Ed as a player. He's got a great motor and he's a good energy rebounder. I hope he does well wherever he goes but the people filling his head with ideas of the NBA are not doing him any favors. This board has been dominated of late by 7-8 posters that don't want to hear anything other than that Miles sucks and needs to get fired and they shout down anybody that has anything remotely positive to say about him or our chances going forward.
Just FYI, I really wanted Miles to succeed. I don't think he sucks, I think he is for whatever reason, inflexible and too set in his ways. I also see him as having an image of being damaged goods now.
The reason I want him gone is it is my opinon that he is gone next year anyway so why wait? I wasn't thrilled with him being next year but I was content with the fact he would. But then came the transfers. I get your points about Marrow, and you are right on some. But my issue is that now with the loss of likely our best offensive rebounder (marrow) and probably best overall rebounder (Jacobsen) what we are going to potentially gain from someone like Copeland, is going to be deminished because of a lack of depth in the front court. JTs development is also deminished as it is not reasonable to expect him to be able to pick up all the slack that the loss of those 2 presents.
I've made it clear that I don't like offensive style that we see out of Miles, and I see why just about anyone playing the post would hate to play the 5 in his offense, which appears to be the main reason Marrow and Jacobsen are leaving.
At this point I see Miles as basically being a lame duck and damaged goods. Having how many open scholarships right now doesn't help. Nebraska is an incredibly tough place to win, and it will be incredibly tough for him to shake that image of being a lame duck/damaged goods. Heck we lost a recruiting battle to Illionis State.
Again, I wanted the guy to well, but to quote an old catch phrase, "Image is everything". Well his and the program's image is not good right now. Whatever buzz Miles had that got Jahil Okafor to actually visit her is completely gone. We need another BUZZ.
I agree as well. I think Eichorst has handled this situation poorly. He either needed to blow out Miles after the tournament loss (which I would have been fine with), or show some faith and extend his contract (even if the buyout didn't change). IMO there's no way Miles can effectively recruit high school kids with 3 years left. Now Miles is left twisting and we're putting a 1-year bandaid on the problem just to save $2M.
Eichorst made the same mistake with the football program. Should have fired Pelini in 2013 after that trainwreck of a game against Iowa, but gave him one more lame duck season for some reason. Then with a full year to look for a replacement, ends up hiring Mike Riley?
By the way, what happened to Eichorst meeting with the media after the Final Four like he promised?
A few things. First of all, I was all for getting rid of Miles after the season, and to be honest wouldn't be too upset if they fired him this afternoon. With that said, the day after the tournament, there was no indication that 4 players were going to bolt. With 20/20 hindsight that decision looks easier now than it did then. Also, it wasn't until the end of the summer that we found out Miles didn't get the 1 year extension. So there is still a chance Eichorst keeps the contract at 4 years.
When you look back on the timing of the Pelini fiasco in 2013. Eichorst was about 9 months into the job, taking over for a legend, who happened to be the guy who hired Pelini. Firing Pelini at that time would have been stupid. I doubt he had the backing of the regents or the boosters at that time.
As far as all he could get was Riley.... I am still waiting on the list of home run coaches lining up to take this job at that time.
I agree with you, but in light of all that's happened, shouldn't SE already have announced an extension in advance of the spring signing period? I'm in favor of a change too, but if SE isn't he at least has to give Miles a fighting chance on the recruiting trail.
At the time the season ended, we had no open scholarships, Webster done and had Akenten signed. They were recruiting for 2018. The probably figured Fuller would leave, but I don't think that weighed heavily in decisions made.
