Man that thing could have been a death trap had the New Madrid cleared its throat.

Do yall remember about 30 years ago when that guy predicted an imminent major earthquake? People took it serious enough that there was a run on stuff. I was was only in the 2nd grade I think so 1990ish. I’m 80 miles from Memphis but my school took it serious enough that we did drills. That’s about all I remember, the day passed without so much as a whimper. Some of you older guys >40 might remember more details.

Two things:

New Madrid will clear it's throat. It may be after we are all gone or living on Mars but it will happen again.

Our infrastructure as a nation is poor but our bridges are unforgivably bad. We need a bipartisan bill within our means to fix these problems in the order of need.

The problem is Washington (R's and D's) will tell us they know our needs better than the engineers and experts on the actually needs of our present infrastructure. It will be pork laden, politicized, and pretty much anal raped by the politicians until nothing gets done.

I would go deeper in the rabbit hole but I do not want to hear D's are better for this or R's are better.

The GD experts on roads and bridges are the people who need to lead this, not someone elected and owes something to people other than the ones who elected them.

That's all I have to say other than I really hope this does not break down into another pissing match.

The bridge at Greenville scares me worse...the company I work for is based in Minneapolis.... know a guy that went across the I35W bridge just minutes before it collapsed.

They wanted to shut it down a couple of years ago for six months to do repairs and everyone had a **** fit so they just did it a little at a time.

I grew up in New Madrid County. We got out of school for 2 days when I was in 3rd grade cause of that prediction.

Wasn’t his name Iben Browning? I never forgot that dude’s name and how ridiculous my daddy said the hysteria was. That was my senior year of high school.

Let's hope so.

The old bridge at Greenville was downright frightening it was so narrow.

There used to be a restaurant at the base of the bridge on the Arkansas side that served great frog legs. I wonder if it is still there.

I assume that means it will be a nightmare to cross the river? We’re traveling to Hot Springs in two weeks for a golf tournament. I kind of wanted to go through Memphis even though it’s a little longer but now I’m thinking we hit up the frog legs place in Arkansas on the way.

I watched the I-40 bridge being built from my 12th floor office in a building on Front Street. If I remember correctly, the main contractor was Frank J. Rooney out of Ft. Lauderdale. I went down to solicit some of their banking business while they were going to be in the Memphis area. It was fascinating to watch....especially when they built the huge cofferdams for pouring the piers. I never would have believed that it would have developed such a serious problem in such a short time....

BTW, before the I-55 bridge was finished in 1949, I rode with my mom and dad across the river on the old Harahan Bridge which had a wooden roadbed.

I just looked on Google. It's still there. The Cow Pen. I haven't been there in years so I couldn't remember the name.

Google said the bridge was built in 1957, so 63 years ago. That's not all that new.

The lanes are too narrow. If you are next to an 18 wheeler and are claustrophobic, the I55 bridge is not for you.

And even worse when you get on the Arkansas side the road bed has those terrible dips in it between the bridge and the main river levee. Your vehicle dips up and down the whole time.

I always took the 40 bridge

It appears to be really bad coming into Memphis eastbound but westbound out of Memphis looks to be fine. At least that’s what the traffic on Google maps looks like.

It's been called the "new bridge" in Memphis forever, just because it's the newer of the two that cross the river there. But no, it's not particularly new.

The only time I ever go into Arkansas for anything is for baseball tournaments. You are exactly right on the dips - it's crazy. But the 55 bridge has always been more convenient than the 40 bridge, despite the craziness of it.

I wonder how Southland feels about all of this. They took a large segment of Memphis gamblers away from Tunica, but if the bridge is out of commission for any length of time, that's going to hurt them pretty badly.

I remember that. I had just graduated from MSU (Dec 1990) and took my first "real" job with FedEx in MElvis.

I was in 4th grade at the time. We would have random earthquake drills where everyone would get under their desk. I sat in the back corner of the room. One day the alarm goes off, everyone gets under their desks, teachers are out at the doors. About half the desks started shaking like crazy. I'm sitting there - not feeling anything, but hanging on because I assume it's coming and the whole place is going to come crashing down. Then it all stops, and I'm like - wtf was that?

Apparently the teacher told the kids at front of the room to shake their desks. I don't know why. But all of us that couldn't hear her were sitting back there scared to death the big one was happening. One girl was literally crying she was so afraid.
