When JWS had the Bulldogs winning games that they weren't supposed to win in his first 3 seasons, was there much talk of him being hired away by big name programs? I know that he was at a different stage of his career than %$!, but he didn't really have any prior allegiance to MSU, and still had several good years in him.

This was before the days of the internet. So, really you only had a couple of sources then. But, I recall hearing rumors he was interviewing for NFL jobs during the mid 90s. To long ago to recall the exact year. Tampa comes to mind for some reason.

The strongest rumors were late in the 2000 season. Suposedly, he had some clandestine meetings with Alabama's AD but obviously..... they went with Franchione instead. Dumb move on their part. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the guy. However, I firmly believe his fire went out when Bama turned him down.

They ALL said, he'll come, he'll win, he'll leave. Like clockwork, after just a couple years, he was supposedly headed back to Pittsburgh. The HI Express (or whatever it was then) changed their sign to say "Please Don't Go Jackie".

In 1995, I moved to Texas and freaked-the-17-out when I picked up the Dallas Morning News sports section to see a color photo of Sherrill vising the Cowboys training camp.

Rumors and fear that Sherrill was going to leave was persistent for years. But as the years passed it became evident that if he were going to leave he would have already done so. And the rumors and fear finally faded away.
