that would have been 18 holes I would have watched...of course, they probably did Phil a favor by letting him go off 2 holes ahead

3rd and 4th round pairings are decided first by overall scores 1st round scores then 2nd round scores then last 9 holes then last 6 holes then last 3 holes then alphabetic if the ties are not yet broken. (Formula may be a little off but that is close). In other words they don't just arbitrarily pair each 6 under together and pick the best ratings matchup. It actually depends on other factors. When Kim made bogey to fall back to 6 under on 18 the announcers knew then that he would be matched up with Tiger. Granted I agree they should pair Mickelson and Woods its just that tournaments don't do that they are bound by PGA rules.

I just thought it was different in majors for some reason...oh well, should still be a good view tomorrow

That Phil and Tiger didn't get paired for tomorrow. Both will be more comfortable with their group which will maybe lead to both shooting good scores and can get paired Sunday instead of Saturday. With the big names atop the leader board their should be some great viewing Sunday afternoon.

got the later pairing. Since Tiger and K.J. were in the clubhouse first at 6, they got the later pairing. I thought I heard that somewhere.

Although maybe they were just yanking Coach's chain with the tiebreaker answer. They are matched up by the "first in, last out" rule. If the pairings were based on second round scores, then K.J. Choi would not be in the second to last pairing, because he shot 71 yesterday while Tiger, Barnes and Kim all shot 70.

rather than first in last out rule. My bad yes that is correct. I did know that you can't just arbitrarily pair up people in the 3rd and 4th rounds there is a steadfast rule in place.

I figured the PGA would just change rules for ratings like the SEC, NFL, and everybody else does

And for somebody who is wrong probably more than anybody on the Board (except Goat), you should refrain from throwing stones

game is. It's a very basic and key element in golf, and they don't screw with it. My mom even knows that, so don't act like it's as obscure as ping pong rules.

they are playing the course and other players as well, not just that one player they are matched with...your comparision was awful

1. It's pretty clear I didn't know the exact rule
2. But like ping pong, if you don't watch much golf or play in golf tournaments, then you aren't likely to know all the rules

It's not a big deal to me...but your comparision was still awful

And if you dont watch muchgolf or play, thenyou also arent likely to know that who you are paired with makes a TONof difference. You arent likely to know that it most certainly matters.

And instead, you are going to continue to say that the comparison is awful.

nowhere did I say the match-ups weren't important, but even with that, they are still playing against the course and the other players. Woods doesnt eliminate Choi if he beats him head to head today.

OP's comparision was to changing teams in the playoffs, where if you win the game head to head, you move on to the next round...

aGAIN- it was a ****** comparision
