Heading down to KC in a couple of week and staying by The Plaza. Any suggestions on where to eat or what to do. Have always gone to KC with the family and doing those family things like the Royals, Chiefs, WOF etc. Empty nester now and going down with the little lady.

I live in KC so we've spent many nights on the Plaza. If you want a Steakhouse on the Plaza go to Capital Grille (but be prepared to spend some money). Off the Plaza, but within about a 5-10 minute drive, the Magistic Steakhouse on Broadway is good and a fun experience. It was an old Mob hang out in the 1920's. The main level is the Steakhouse, the lower level is partially underground and is still fashioned as a 1920's speakeasy with live Jazz Music on the weekends. The Melting Pot is one of our favorites for the atmosphere and enjoyment. We love Seasons 52. That's our current favorite. Fogo De Chao is good for a Brazilian Resturant. No matter what we always go to McCormick and Schmick for dessert and have the Chocolate Bag. The two best desserts in KC are the Chocolate Bag at McCormick and Schmick on the Plaza and the Carrot Cake at J. Alexander's in Overland Park. My wife and I love to resturant hop, and we love fine dining and wine. A great night on the Plaza for us would be a little shopping (Vineyard Vines is my favorite), the Cheese Board with some wine at Coopers Hawk. Dinner at at Seasons 52. The Chocolate Bag at McCormick for dessert.

If you're out toward where I live in Johnson County, Bone Fish in Overland Park, and Bristol or Pig and Finch are our favorites in Leawood. IMO, the best Steak in KC is at 801 Chophouse. There's one in Leawood and one downtown. But be prepared to spend some money. 2 Filets, 2 wedge salads, and a Lobster Mac N Cheese was $350 before tip. And we even took our own wine to the resturant and they waived the corking fee, so that should give you and idea as to price. Wino tip. Always take your own wine to restaurants. They'll charge you a corking fee, but the cost of the wine at the liquor store, plus the corking fee is usually less than buying the same bottle at the resturant.

Q39 zagat rated BBQ. It will be busy. Call ahead. Best in KC. Jack stacks is good too.

O'dowds has a nice little rooftop bar.

Hopcat and Alehouse have nice rooftop bars a short distance away, cheap uber ride.

Chuys has really good margaritas

Someone said melting pot, somehow it stays in business, probably because it's prices are ridiculous and you have to cook your own food.

For a simple lunch, I have always loved the Classic Cup. Not too terribly pricey either.

For a good steak that is reasonable, I found the Plaza III steakhouse to be very good. Starker's Reserve also prepared a very good steak that was reasonably priced. Edit - Starkers Reserve has closed. Apparently the Head Chef passed away.

As was mentioned, the Capital Grill is good, but is a little steep, and I believe is a national chain also. The steak was great, but my favorite at the time was their jalapeno cole slaw. Bonefish is also a chain, which you can have in Omaha, so I would stick to the locally-owned places. STAY AWAY from the Hereford House, unless you want the most bland steak you've ever had.

There was a place called Boozefish on West Broadway that I loved. I believe it's still there. My all-time favorite was Lidia's, close to Union Station. It didn't break the bank and the owner/chef is/was well renowned. Pierpont's in Union Station was also very good seafood. Piropos, which is north of the river, I thought was quite good also.

Speaking of things to do, Union Station usually has an exhibit of some sort taking place. Science City is great for kids.

Succotash for breakfast was a very cool experience. Blue Bird Bistro is good as well. Both are just a really fun experience. Succotash is sort of South of downtown and Blue Bird is West of downtown.

There is a place in Westport where you can get a very cheap hour-long clothes-on full body massage for about $40 apiece. It was a lot of fun, because it isn't a private massage, and probably 15 people are getting a massage at the same time, so it's sort of a massage collective. But it is very relaxing after dinner, and they will put you side by side with your spouse or significant other. It's pretty cool and fun actually.

The Kemper and Nelson Atkins Museums are pretty cool. Have fun..

The above replies have great suggestions. I would add Cafe Trio on the east side of the Plaza. Go for Happy Hour and sit on the patio overlooking the Plaza. Great spot and good food. One of our favorites.

Just got back from there last night. Best place we ate was Joe's Kansas City BBQ. Food was fantastic and my family of 4 ate for under $60 which was a nice change from spending the day at OOF/WOF and spending that much on cokes and french fries.

If you want BBQ while at The Plaza try Q39, Jack Stack was no better than Applebee's.

If you have a BIG appetite and love meat, hit up Fogo de Chao, it is far and away my favorite place.

I live in KC and while Q39 is great, Char Bar's Q is even better in the higher higher end BBQ category. It is located in Westport, 5m from the plaza.

I've had drinks at Char Bar but no food. It's a cool place. I'll try it in a week or 2.

Joe's is really good. The zman sandwich was rated #1 in the country by ny times or washington post... something like that.

I like them both. Q39 better date atmosphere. Food is not that expensive, but the drinks arent cheap.

I still like Gate's better than any BBQ in KC. 2nd would probably be Joe's. Gate's sauce has a hint of vinegar, which for someone that is a sour/salty tooth, is great. Can't stand Arthur Bryant or KC Masterpiece.

For all the KC people, where do you live and which Husker Bars do you frequent? I'm in Southeast Olathe, so the Minskey's on 159th is pretty much within walking distance of my house. Also hit up Coach's on 135th from time to time. I've been to Callahan's on 87th a couple of times, but the other 2 spots are so close to my house it's just not worth the drive.

We live fairly close to the Plaza (Mission Hills). My top recommendation for lunch would be the cafe at the Nelson-Atkins museum. For BBQ, Joe's is tough to beat, although I would throw Brobeck's in the mix. Stoud's on Shawnee Mission Parkway in Fairway is a quick trip from the Plaza - it was once a KC institution and is a great place to go if you like the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans type of meal. High-end dining I would recommend the Bristol. However, if I were to recommend one place to eat it would be d'Bronx pizza on 39th and State Line.

As for bars catering to people our age (40s), I would recommend JJ's off of 48th and Roanoke Parkway.

Ya know, when I heard there was a Stroud's opening in Omaha, I was excited. But then I ate there...and it was the most bland, tasteless meal I've had in a long time. Now I'm trying to remember if the Stroud's in KC was this bad, and if I was just duped by the hype of the place, or if the original Stroud's was completely different tasting. But the one in Omaha is bad. KFC has more taste.

I lived in Hyde Park, and we always went to the Minsky's in the River Market. Always a nice crowd of Husker fans. I went to Callahan a few times, and it was fun, but you always have to get there way early to get a table.

I went to Stroud's once, I'd have been just fine never going.

Anyone been to the place call "A Little BBQ Joint" ? It's in Independence and while I generally think a 30 ft wall should be put up around Independence and it should be filled with water, drained and then anything left should be burned, this place I'd spare.
