Mississippi recruiting at its best. Croomp, Gene, and the big O. Would have made for a great t.v. movie on Lifetime.
Does anyone know where I could find the story about Robert Elliot's recruitment that included gene fielding phone calls and the fight in his front yard.
Been years since I read meat market, but unless I'm wrong, wasn't Freeze his main recruiter? I can't remember.
If you remember, as a true freshman, he was getting significant snaps at CORNER. The backfield was crowded and that's where the need was. He was pretty damn athletic and very quick. The knee injury completely destroyed him.
to the NCAA is beyond me.
Had to do with both schools scheduling In-homes the same night. MSU's coaches were still there when Ole Miss' coaches showed up, but I think they showed up an hour early. Pretty sure there wasn't a fist fight but O and either Grimes or Melvin got into a verbal altercation in the yard. Elliot's uncle told the Ole Miss coaches to leave. Some of that may be off because it's been a long time since I thought about it. Either way it's my 2nd favorite recruiting story. Floyd Raven claiming his mom signed his LOI is still my favorite. Recruiting is fun.
The thing I like most about this story is that is was all over a recruit that amounted to absolutely nothing on the field. We both wanted this guy so much we went to ridiculous odds to get him and he was never worth it. That knee injury might have been the dagger, but even before that he never seemed all that good when he ran for you all.
Don't take this as me being glad he wasn't productive or that he got hurt. Just hindsight that he didn't really amount to much after all the recruiting shenanigans.

Um, because the story was completely made up by an om recruiting site.
He had some great games against terrible h.s. defenses but was greatly overrated.
Could have sworn that the altercation was with Freeze and from what was said at the time...I am sure Freeze asked the MSU coaches for forgiveness after his verbal tirade.
I was there. Right before halftime was when I realized that our head coach had no clue what the clock rules were for college football.Robert Elliott got the only TD of the day at Georgia Tech in 2008. Without that score, MSU gets shut out. I will always be thankful for Robert Elliott scoring that day.
