I think Keegan should sit it out. Griffin deserves to be on the team and Burns has played well the second half of season. But I expect Keegan to play. He’s gonna get hammered if things go south.

^ He’s going to get hammered / second guessed no matter what decision he makes.

Play in the opening match and then the singles. Rest of the time he Captains. Besides, he has what - 6 vice captains? They should be able to assist imo.
Also head out first in singles. He would fire the crowd up, can handle the moment and would have time to rally the troops when he’s done.

Keegan should play. Has gotten hot and will absorb the crazy NY crowd like no other to play even better. Like others have said, play in the first match and then lead the singles matches and he will be able to use the rest of the time doing captain stuff. That being said, if he plays well then why not ride the wave and try to get more points himself instead of risking it with an unproven newbie who may melt under the pressure. He has plenty of Vice Captains to help spread the workload. If they lose, he will be questioned no matter what he does. The risk reward is in his favor.

I'm not sure why they chose an active player as Captain.

I'd sun Griffin for Burns. Burns has losing Presidents and Ryder Cup records, though small sample.

Given Young is from the mean streets of NYC, prep schools and country clubs, you gotta name him.

Gonna give my 6 picks:

Thomas
Morikawa
Bradley
Young
Cantlay
Burns

Cantlay had a MC in 3 of the 4 majors this year and hasn't won in over 3 years. Terrible pick.

Ben Griffin has 2 wins, 2 top 10's in majors, had a solid playoff run, and is 9th in points. He should be a lock.

If I had a chance to do something that hadn't been done since 1963 and honestly deserve the chance (which he does), I sure as heck would pick myself

Yep....given that the captain's role in this event is about as significant as an out of place blade of grass, he is deserving of a spot.

Do the Euros go with the same 12? Hard to argue, they all are ranked pretty far up there in their point list.

If I were Luke Donald, and were inclined to pull a surprise, might look at Marco Penge, highly regarded young player who just won the Danish Open and was 2d or 3rd at Scottish Open (IIRC), hits the ball a mile.

Last time I checked, Europe was still +135 underdog, will definitely bet them at that price. Think a "tie" was either 12-1 or 14-1, which is not a bad bet either.

Replace Cantlay and Burns with Griffin and Henley. Keegan played Sunday with Henley and pulled him aside afterwards. Interesting to see if he picks him or not.

Sub Morikawa for Griffin. IMO. Morikawa is a mess with his play and replacing caddies like changing his underwear. That is a sign he is mentally off his golf game.

Yeap. Best buds with Scheffler. I expect to see them paired together. Like JT / Spieth used to be. As well as Cantlay / Schauffele.

I'm not a Cantlay fan but you can't deny his match play record. Beat Justin Rose in singles last time out. I'd rather have a guy that's proven in match play over a guy "in better form" that would fold under pressure. I hope JJ Spaun isn't that guy.

You could wheel out the corpses of Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter to Bethpage and they'd probably be good for a combined 8-9 points. Some guys are more suited to Ryder Cups than others.

The right move i feel. The Ryder Cup is enough pressure as is, without having the extra burden of thinking you have to win your match’s in order to avoid huge second guessing. And Keegan is a little older. He may be gassed after a long season. I can’t complain about Cantlay with his record, but i don’t like him and would have preferred Gotterup who’s a Jersey guy and acts like he gives a ****.

Using this logic then do away with all of the qualifiers and have nothing but captain's picks.

Regarding Cantlay, he has done ZERO this year to show he is in any way slightly worthy of being on the team. Past match play records have this much influence on what you do when you tee it up 2-4 years later.

Tiger, Phil, Furyk, Couples, Love and Spieth all underperformed in Ryder Cups. And all were worthy selections at the time. Some guys play better in match play and actually give a **** about representing their country instead of collecting majors. I can't stand Cantlay but I suspect he's not going to be a weak link at Bethpage.

Collin should not be anywhere near the team. He's alienated most golf fans this year with his incessant bitching about media availability and what/not. He's soft. And if he plays like **** the Bethpage crowd will let him hear it.

Not a fan of his either. His game has fallen off and comes across as real prick.

I thought the picks were kind of hard to argue with. Personally, I would have liked to have seen Maverick get in over Cantlay, but, not a big deal.

Pretty much by the book by Donald, thought he might go with Penge instead of Hojgaard, but his team was pretty set. I already bet Europe, so not surprised at this lineup.

OT, but did anyone else check out the Walker Cup on TV from Cypress Point? I would give a body part to play there. I did not realize that 15 and 16 were back to back par 3s (and I think there are back to back par 5s on the front for members). You don't see that every day.

Yes I watched both days. The fog on 15/16 was tough Sunday. 16 especially, playing 217 yards. It was complete domination by the US. Thru the first 9 singles matches it was 8.5 -.5. The Euro/Ireland team finally got a full point on the next to last pairing.

What is really amazing and demanding, a lot of the kids are competing in the Folds Of Honor at American Dunes in Michigan. I mean they finished in Cali on Sunday evening, then go to Michigan the next day to compete.

I watched the first round of the 54 hole event yesterday. Round 2 today starts at 2:30 CDT I believe. It also is a very nice course.

Not crazy about the Euro's attire. Too much going on. Gold/yellowish collar, no thanks. Rory's tee shot on #1 was pretty daring. No doubt in my mind he will stripe it when play begins.
