The sequence that is absolutely killing me

is the second down and 1 play from the 2 yard line. Anyone who thinks playcalling was A-ok last night need only look to this series. We work the ball to the 2 yard line (after an offsides penalty on Bama, mind you), and I sat there and told the guy next to me "this should absolutely be a no-brainer. Bring in J-Rob and shump and let's play big boy football. We have 1 yard to get 4 more chances to put the ball in." I thought it was obvious... but what do we do? We go 4 wide and proceed to throw the ball... incomplete. Next play, same thing (pass), same result... THIS TIME with an ineligible receiver downfield... boom. 5 yard penalty, Saban accepts, now we HAVE to pass... incomplete, aGAIN. This set up the missed FG.

This was absolutely the dumbest series all freakin' night. Before you say it, I know passing was pretty damn good for us last night... they have a young secondary. However, the game of football changes DRASTICALLY inside the 10 and teams that cannot run the ball inside the 10 generally do not score TDs. Of course my pipe dream was to go to the I Formation and run it downhill right into their mouth with our two hardest hitting backs... but we didn't want to play physical there. It's killing me... we coached our way out of 7 points and huge opportunity to take control of the game right there.

Don't we have an all American RG and a center on the Remington Watch? Get your *** under center and run your two big back for a17 yard. That series is reason enough to fire Him Monday

This is a situation I wouldn't have minded seeing Williams try a QB sneak.

Anybody arguing against you on this should be baker acted.

You won't get any argument from me. That stupidity was beyond comprehension. I am well aware that Dan may have made that call, but no matter, our current offensive coordinator must be released at the completion of this season. If Dan is unable to assemble a competent staff, then he isn't deserving of his current position as head corch.

I said

it last night and I'll say it again, that was pathetic from our coaches. We run the ball w our smallest rb, run it w Tyler, the throw it to our shortest receiver...TWCE...then miss a FG. That was just 17ing pathetic.

Is it against the law or does it break a special code, for a spread team to line up in the I or power I formation, once inside the 3 yard line?

I thought Williams should have thrown just about every play on those last couple of possessions. What did we have to lose? They knew we were going to run and they stopped us which led to third and longs. I agree though we should have ran it when Tyler was in there on the drive of the missed fg.

There was a time with Mullen when we ran the wishbone on the goal line. Granted, we had a fullback and a hard hitting running back... Hell, even the diamond would have been better than 4 wide. Everyone in the stadium thought those should have been insanely obvious play calls.

Agree with everything each has stated except one point. DO NOT RUN TYLER! He's a terrible runner, we tried him earlier in the game on a 3rd and 2 zero gain. Then we try him on a 5 yard touchdown run, doesn't make it and then proceeds to fumble, luckily we recovered. Tyler is not a runner should never be given that opportunity. Bad bad play calls.

This was where we lost our shot at an upset...

I know I'm the resident Russell homer, but really I'm just disappointed we don't set our players up for success by playing to their strengths. It's not illegal for us to run I-form under center. Surely it can't be too difficult to implement three runs and a play action pass out of an under center I. It's so frustrating to watch us call a read option with Russell and Perkins two weeks in a row.

I had zero confidence we would score. Mullen's ability inside the ten against a quality opponent is horrendous. There are way too many examples to prove it. He just needs to play it simple. Put in the biggest guys, put QB under center, and get the damn last 12 inches of the drive over with.

Let me say up front that I wholeheartedly agree. When I saw Perkins and Russell in the backfield, I told a couple of guys around me "damn, here comes the Russell read for a loss". I hate that nonsense.

But I just watched the replay. Go look at this play, and watch Samuel or Warren (one of them) at TE at the top of the screen. He shows block initially, then releases into the end zone and is all by himself.

If that was by design, it was great. Maybe it was supposed to be a jump pass. Either Russell decided to keep it or the TE was just lost. But had Russell lobbed it over the LOS, it's an easy 6 for the lead. #whatmightvebeen

eta: it was Samuel. Could've just been that he left his block and was lost. Who knows.

A lot of good points. I knew we wouldnt score when JRob wasnt in the backfield. Anyone remember Tyson Lee against LSU? Epic failure to use your best choice. Stupid play calling when it counts.

After watching Myles Jack the last two weeks I'm convinced we should give the ball to Chris Jones if we absolutely must have a yard. There's no 17ing way he doesn't get a yard.

Was watching youtube highlights tonight of our game against Arky in 2010

We had two goal line situations in that game. Both times we lined Relf up under center in the power I with a fullback and Ballard at tailback. First time we handed it to Ballard up the middle for the score and second time we ran option and pitched to Ballard who walked in. Don't understand why Mullen has gone away from that to the **** we are running now. Surely we can line up in a power I with JRob or Shumpert in the backfield and bang forward for a yard. Since we don't have a true fullback, Shump could even line up as the fullback in this package with JRob behind him. This line up in the shotgun hand it to our smallest back who goes down on first contact up the middle nonsense is maddening.

While I don't disagree with your basic point, I'd feel remiss not to point out three major differences: (1) Relf, (2) Ballard, and (3) Alabama.

Hommie don't play that.

1/2 are no excuses. We could do it fine with what we have. Put tyler under center (in this case because Dak was out), and give it to Jrob/shump/griffin over the left guard with a lead blocker. I could live with not getting it if we did that, but not this shotgun ********. If we can't get one yard lining up in the I behind your all american LG then you don't deserve to win.

Mullen is his own worst enemy. He is just not a good offensive coach, it's like he's retarded sometimes...

Run the damn ball from the 1 yard line...

I did not disagree with the basic point, and agree that if you can't get that yard, you end up losing the game. But, if we lined up with a full back and tried to get one yard against Bama, even with JRob, I think there is at least a 50/50 chance that we get stuffed. With Relf and Ballard against Arkansas, it was probably 90%. Having said all of that, I actually thought it would have been better for us if there had been no penalty and we'd been in 4th and one because we probably would have gone for it.

If nothing else, we have to get the kicker situation straightened out by next year. Those types of field goals have to be automatic. You see it in the NFL all the time. Settling for field goals is not the end of the world, if you can make them. You saw it in the Saints game.
