What do you think Gene's Page would be like if you had were in the same situation? Let's say Darrell Royal was still coaching at MSU (he's 3 years older than Joe Pa), and he'd taken you to 30 some odd bowls, 2 national titles, a handful of undefeated seasons, and about 8 or 9 conference titles.

Do you think your fans would be completely rational about the situation? Probably not. You'd have some that would be, but a good number of them would be rationalizing and/or in some stage of denial.

It's easy to point the finger and say they're being crazy, just like it was last year with Auburn fans denying any wrongdoing with Newton, but the majority of fanbases would fall into that category when it comes to situations that potentially defame their university or coach.

Most fans aren't rational when it comes to their team/coach. Mix in the fact that Paterno has been at PSU for 61 years, 46 of them as a head coach, and PSU's love/attachment to him runs just a tad deeper than the average fanbase, making them slightly less capable of rational thought in relation to anything to do with him.

If you listened to the reporters asking the Board of Trustees questions last night, most of them were attacking the Board for their hasty move. To the average outsider, it seemed like the only logical choice, but to normally rational media members who have an attachment to PSU, they couldn't comprehend it.

Here is a guy who has coached for 60 years, is 84 years old and steadfastly refused to retire wanting to go out when he is good and ready. He is a icon among icons in CFB not just for his longevity and success on the field but for the reputation of running a championship program in a uniquely squeakly clean manner. All of that. ALL of it, is swept away like so much dust in seemingly an instant. Suddenly the icon is a disgrace. He will not go out on his terms. He was FIRED. No hero's send off. No monumental retirement ceremony. Relegated to the dust bin of history as a forever tragic figure. Not for one minute am I defending paterno nor do I think his treatment is undeserved but for PSU fans who worshiped the man and really knew no other coach it has to be very, very hard to process all of this. I think a bit of derangement is to be expected and really understood. The first steps in dealing with a shocking tragedy like this is anger followed by denial.

To most of them, this is like losing a father or grandfather that they loved and losing him unexpectedly to something like a murder.

They can't process it yet. Give them time. They'll get there, but you can't expect them to have rational reactions to something like this given their attachment to the situation.

I don't care how you slice it, he basically did nothing while little boys were being raped in his locker roomshower. If their fans can see that then they are derange. No excuse for him or thier fans for acting like they are.

If I learned my father or grandfather were perverts who preyed on young boys, I'd be enraged with them, not the ones who exposed them or arrested them. I think your rationale is total ********.
