Just shows you how different the college game is from the pro game. Every one of those folks were not just great college players, they were dominant. And amounted to jack **** in the NFL.

you could kind of see it coming- Mandarich, Bosworth, Mirer, Bruce, Schuler, Ware, Klingler.

Schliter and Philips had legal problems even in college.

Tim Couch is the only surprise to me as far as how I thought he would fare in the NFL, and I initially thought Ryan Leaf would be pretty good, but then we all realized that he was a head case.

leading the Browns to the playoffs one season until he got hurt late in the year and thats when Kelly Holcomb came into to play. Holcomb eventually won the starting job and Couch went to the Packers where a shoulder injury ended his career. I believe Leaf won only 3 games his whole career if i'm not mistaken. Side note: Smith made a 9 on the Wonder Lick test or whatever they call it.

he's playing pretty well since his meltdown last year and getting the starting job back from Collins. Hell, they are 3-0 since the beatdown in Foxboro and the bye week when Young won the starting job back (ok, maybe it was by default, but..)

Leinart is definitely on deck.

Leinhart should be on there now. Funny story they mentioned about Leaf vs. Manning when doing the Combine interviews. They asked both guys what would you do if you were NFL's No. 1 Draft pick. Manning stated how much harder he would work on and off the practice field to be able to deliver the expectations whichever organization had set for him; of course the typical Manning response. Leaf stated to be honest guys I would probably go to Vegas and celebrate for a week like I was just the No. 1 Draft pick. Red flag right there if I'm conducting the interview.

I always thought the biggest bust was Gino Torretta from Miami, although he was a 7th round pick not as big a bust as your list of first rounders but how in hell did that guy win a Heisman??

Andre Ware, Rashaan Salaam, Ty Detmer, Jason White, and dozens of others did. They were great college football players. Heisman doesn't have a pro success requirement.

ripping Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys for taking Troy Aikman over Mandarich. "You don't rebuild a franchise with a QB, you build it on the line and they just passed up the best player in this draft." Another shining Kiper moment. And Green Bay stayed down a couple of more years after picking Mandarich next.

If we're talking about 1st round picks that didn't work out (rather than 1st pick busts), you have to talk about the Saints' 1st round (11th overall) pick of P/K Russell Erxleben out of University of Texas in 1979. I wish I could clear much of my Saints' memories out of my head.

Marinovich is missing? How quickly we forget! I'd put Ty Detmer and Curtis Enis in there as well, and hold a future position for Sam Bradford.

Akili Smith was a good call, whoever said that one.

Leaf, though, is definitely number one, just for the fact that he was once considered Peyton's equal. As Peyton continues to break records and Canton starts constructing a separate wing for him, Leaf's flop becomes even more horrible in stark comparison.

In that draft, the first 5 picks were Troy Aikman, Tony Mandarich, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, and Deion Sanders. Everyone (other than Mandarich) is potentially a Hall of Famer.

can you put Ty Detmer on that list? He was drafted in a round that doesn't exist anymore, the 9th. In other words, he would have been undrafted today. And he played 13 years as a backup. Detmer as a draft bust is just not correct, especially when you look at some of the first rounders that year.

First Pick-Steve Emtman
2nd-Quentin Coryatt
3rd-Sean Gilbert
4th-Desmond Howard
6th-David Klinger
9th-Tommy Vardell

There's 6 busts in the first 9 picks, I bet they didn't play 13 years combined.

I think Brady Quinn is well on his way to joining the list - though he was a late 1st Rounder (I think). I just remember how all the ESPN coverage on Draft Day was "Poor Brady... still waiting..."

And doesn't Ditka's "Ricky Williams trade for the rest of the draft" have to rate up there somewhere? I mean, he's been fairly solid at times (mostly for the Dolphins), but the Saints had NO draft picks after him! And he didn't last but a couple of seasons in NO and was weird as hell the whole time...

only the Saints would pick a punter with the number 11 pick of the first round. There aren't words.

Howard was a Super Bowl MVP, albeit as a special teams player. He may not be a HOFer, but hardly a bust. The others are right on the money, esp. Klingler & Emtman Detmer was one of those guys who was so overhyped in college, his legitimate achievements notwithstanding, that his pro "career" was miserably pathetic in comparison. Calling him a draft bust may be incorrect, but I still think of him as a bust in the same way I do Danny Wuerffel - outrageous college hype (including undeserved Heismans IMO) followed by a ridiculously unmemorable stint in the pros.

I'll ask a hard question: was JJ considered an NFL bust?

I also think Reggie Bush is as much on the waiting list as Young or Leinart.
