We all saw what happened last time Tommy Tuberville was forced to run a spread offense. If I'm Texas Tech, I would have hired the Houston coach instead.

And even though they claim they fired Leach for cause, they've got to know the odds of them eventually having to fork over the $400K per year buyout are pretty good. Still, I can't imagine that Houston's coach had all that big of a buyout in his contract.

I suppose a big factor in his favor was that he was a free agent with no buy out.
I'm pretty sure Texas Tech has enough money to buy out a Conference USA coach. This hire just does not make much sense to me. Just as mysterious the entire Mike Leach saga is, the hire is almost as mysterious.

I agree that Tech has the money but judging from the emails that were made public, what I would question is their willingness to spend it

And Tuberville taking this job just tells me that he was desperate to get a job period. Too bad for him that he was passed over for the Virginia job- which I think would have been a perfect fit for him, and the fact that the South Florida job has just now come open.

And Texas Tech didn't have to be this desperate. They certainly would have gotten Sumlin from Houston or Todd Graham from Tulsa.

They are obviously just cheap.

The problem with this hire is Tubbs will be getting sloppy 7th's in talent. He will not be able to play power ball with unwanted nobodies. Leach was successful because he put average players in a system where they could succeed. He is not going to get a Ronnie Brown or Cadillac to go to Lubbock.

The Midland-Odessa-Lubbock-Amarillo area produces good RBs. It's not all spread option attacks here in Texas. Ears can find the right talent in Lubbock.

Besides, Lubbock is not a terrible town. With over 210,000 people . . . it is quite a step up from the greater Auburn/Opelika metropolitan area. Ears will get the talent there . . . if Leech can do it with no HC experience, don't sell Tubby out.

Lubbock is a ********. That's not to say Auburn is a metropolis, but it doesn't rain mud or smell like cow **** in Auburn, either.

To each his own, though.

Tubberville isn't known for patience with his assistants and the TT offense was Leach's baby. Tubberville has no loyalty to the system.

He knew he was on the hot seat after the Borges offense proved to be mediocre when you didn't have 6-8 NFL players on offense, at least four of them first round picks. So he hired Tony Franklin without ever meeting with him face to face .Almost as soon as Frankin arrived, the problems started. The BBQ Gang, or something like that, which consisted of Tub's buddies from the UM days, hated Franklin. They basically put him in an "us or that guy" situation, and Tuberville was again loyal to his friends and fired Franklin mid-season.

get heavily involved in all of that? I was under the impression that Lowder wanted to run the spread, forced Tuberville to fire Borges and hire Franklin, and Tuberville resented that.

As would I if I were in Tuberville's shoes.
