Well, football fans, this ain't Lax or hockey, but this game will certainly be exciting. LA made quick work of their week 1 opponent, while NT escaped with a win over a York team that is typically not very competitive, but much improved this year. LA may be without their starting QB and RB, but their defense looks filthy as usual and I do not anticipate NT putting up as may points as they did in last year's 1st round PO game. LA took most of their starters out mid 3rd vs. NT last year and took their foot off the gas - huge mistake (especially in the Range Rover/Jaguar bowl). Which team will prove to be the raining "cake-eater". Would love to hear your thoughts? Voodoo, Ramblin, Jwar, Epic, McCaravan, Dean, Ignazio, Witty, MS guys, Rock, et. al. What say you?

Watched the New Trier game and unsure if New Trier is less than advertised or York is pretty good.

Two long passes vs completely blown coverage, and one nice run by NT’s Sitzer was all NT had on the night offensively. Those 3 plays were 150 of their total yardage, and 100% of their scoring

Seemed like York controlled time of possession and, most surprisingly controlled the LOS. Olges still showed up, but wasn’t consistently dominant. York’s young OL put together long sustained drives against a solid front 7.

Alas the better team won, and it’s not unusual for even a really good team to look past an unheralded foe, especially when facing LA the following week.

I’ve gotta believe LA wins by 10+

But I really hope I’m wrong.

I think that's the question to ask. Didn't get to see the game but from the little bits of film I've found York seems to have made big improvements from last year. 4 big, junior olineman who played well against NT including a guard who is a good wrestler and who will be giving WSS defenses headaches this season. Much more to say on them but my point is that I think York is decent and will be fairly competitive in the WSS, and might get to 5 wins for a playoff spot (wk 3-4 @ LT then vs Willobrook, plus wk 6 @OPRF should decide that).

Given that, it should give pause that NT had such a tight game. I'll go with LA by 3 possessions, but Holecek leaves the 1s in for longer than he did last year. If QB1 and RB1 are both out for LA, then I can't say. What's the depth at RB/QB for the Ramblers this year?

LA 35, NT 10

Where else can a team play within walking distance from campus and still be visitors? Hope the band and student cheering section march to the game from LA.

If it weren't for the location of this away game, I would be bitching that LA only has three home games this season.

The depth on LA's roster at all posts is fairly substantial.

They are having a BBQ in the quad for the students and then walking over. Should be pretty cool. I remember practicing at NTW as a Sophomore and walking over there every day.

I don’t know much about the Trevs (I rely on you guys up north to get me up to speed on the northern teams!;))

But I will say this - Rivalry games are tricky tricky and more tricky. The team that on paper might look to be way out matched more times than not,.. finds a way to play the game of their lives and it’s a total slug fest game.

Assuming the Trevs bought out the entire supply of BowieBars last week to deprive the Ramblers of their nutrition bars - I will say LA 28 Trevs 21. If the Bowie Bars are in stock and plentiful then LA 38 Trevs 10.

Edit: This is the CSN game correct? I’m going to watch the replay of this one and get a better look at New Trier for myself!!

Edit Edit - dang the CSN game is MC/MS. Oh well that’s a pretty good one as well but I was hoping to see New Trier (I have never seen them play live or on TV).

I honestly don't know too much about NT. I did see them at Marist in the 2016 playoffs but hard to really comment on it. Not sure what they have coming up like I was with BR and Marist. Obviously a rivalry game you have to throw the records out. LA only won by 3 last year (I realize were up 35-10) so u never know.

The Trevs will get Maine Southed by the Ramblers. They are just too strong defensively for NT. Also better coached.

Bowie:

I am not sure if you are referring to me or Wittymoniker when you mentioned "Witty," but I will answer out of turn if you were not citing me.

While most are predicting a blowout victory favoring the Ramblers, I hasten to remind members this is a fierce rivalry, and a heated neighborhood rivalry at it.

A blowout is possible, but not likely. I say this not because NT is some superpower lying in wait, but because John Holecek is not in the habit of putting up unnecessary points on the board for the purpose of bringing opponents to their knees. To Holecek, it's a symbol of very poor sportsmanship.

However, I hope it is a habit John will set aside for this weekend's game. I'd like nothing more than to see LA grind NT into dust.

Every year, some ambitious sportswriter looking to ingratiate themselves with the NT elite finds a way to shove NT's football program into a pre-season top-twenty poll. It's nothing more than a juvenile, romantic attachment to the school. When writers are fearful of being thoroughly embarrassed and know they can not place the team in the top-twenty, they resort to over-hyping one or more of the players.

I've had fun with it for three decades, watching these writers vomit up human interest stories about this or that NT player. They then make complete fools of themselves by hauling a camera into the homes of these overrated players, and asking silly questions of the blowhard father, the alluring but coquettish mother and family members, as if the son is headed to the NFL. They never fail to mention the kid is in all "honors" classes, harnesses a 5.bazillion gpa on a 5.0 scale, but neglect to add the kid got a 22 on his ACT. (What the heck? He's a poor test taker, right?)

Years ago, Mike Royko waded into this territory and ripped the school. It was hilarious and I reveled in the moment. He never did it again. I suspect some Winnetka resident (and possibly a NT alum) working for the Tribune Company threw a tantrum and managed to slap Royko's wrist.

When the game is over, I hope LA hands NT a loss they won't forget.

And when MS plays NT, my greatest desire is to see the Hawks thump the Trevians' skull.

But before any poster here dismisses this as some disgruntled commentary, one of the main reasons I despise NT is because when they manage to win a title, we never hear the end of it. These self-possessed windbags are still celebrating winning the CSL freshman "B" baseball title from 1923.

The school may boast winning more state titles than any other school, but it's a misleading claim to superiority. The school may collect state titles in badminton, hockey, lacrosse, or swimming like rummy hands, but until they win a football title, or even become relevant in football, I'll clutch my dim opinion of the school and continue to snicker at their overrated athletic programs.

An NT's football program isn't going anywhere as long as MS remains on top.

I’m almost done with my research on this match but before I can give my prediction, can you tell me if the parking lots will be equipped with enough charging stations for the Tesla Model Xs (Ludicrous upgrade of course)?

Bowie:

Since there are two posters here, myself and SR's fine representative, Wittymoniker, with similar names, people tend to confuse us when addressing each.

I am gently recommending to you in the future you refer to Wittymoniker as "Witty" and to myself as either "MW" or "MWitt." I do not write this post for the purposes of personal vanity or to rap your knuckles. In contrast, it is meant to aid you in future posts.

I can not say for certain, besides the obvious, who began the "Witty" for Wittymoniker, but I did not anoint myself either "MW" or "MWitt." It just came my way over the years and I do not object.

Quite frankly, I prefer "MW" or "MWitt" over the sobriquet given to me by CrossBones many years ago. Bones alluded to me as "M-Nit-Wittman" between 2001-03 before I earned his respect.

I have since forgiven him for the affront.

New Trier has one of the best coaches around in Brian Doll. Approachable, gentlemanly, happy to converse about the game - makes it very hard to keep the rivalry nastiness alive. He's coached a handful of guys into D-1 programs, grown the program, even put the old Indian arrowhead logo on the helmets. No doubt he's got a few good plays reserved for the second half.

At this point, I probably know more about Chuck Thompson from Rockford, Michigan than I do about the Ramblers. They dropped the ball a couple times in the red zone, a bad sign. And QB1 has his arm in a sling, forcing them to rely on QB2, Schlitz (not Schlitz, upon which no one should rely). Supposedly has a strong arm, but at this point I'd prefer a ground battle. letting the linemen win the battle. Maybe line up Dixon in the Wildcat?

If LA wins by more than two scores, it'll only be because they remember last year's near fiasco.

It's a tough ticket. They will not be selling them at the ticket booth on game day. You'll need to go to New Trier today. They started selling tickets at 10 am until they run out.

Gotta love the "Its a Great Day to Beat a Rambler" t shirts that have been popping up around Wilmette...here is my take ....LA stupidly took their foot off the gas in last years playoff and there is a lesson to be learned there. Never take your foot off their throat in a rivalry game, I dont think they make that mistake again. I expect the first Quarter to be tight with NT taking a lead for a while, then LA finds their groove in the second and third and finishes strong with a running clock

LA starting QB out, rivalry games always add something to the mix, game is sold out ( it really is ) - no more tickets left - so big crowd along the fences.........New Trier with the old Indian head on the helmets and the students wearing their blue and green "It's a Great Day to Beat a Rambler T - Shirts" ( nice touch ! ) .......Can't get any better than that - kudos to both coaches and athletic staff / admin for getting the game back together ....hopefully it holds up to the Hype....I like the LA defense....LA 24- NT 14 ...we'll see............

How many students does LA get from the NT district?

I still remember having my "get to know you" lunch with our Senior VP when I was hired at my job 11 years ago. We talk about many things - one subject was that my boss went to LA. So i said to him, "You're a Rambler."

The look on his face - the reaction to the perceived affront made me quickly explain: You know - a Rambler - the Loyola Acadamy mascot. I'm not saying you ramble on when speaking - please know that! I'm a high school football nut so I just happen to know your school mascot. I swear!"

Fortunately, he believed me!

From Loyola's Football Alumni Page:

Loyola fans unable to secure tickets to this Friday's match up between LA and NT are invited to a special viewing party in Loyola's East Gym! Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

This is a family friendly event and all guests are encouraged to wear maroon and gold!! We are all looking forward to cheering on our Ramblers! As fans, we will be representing our school, our community and our Rambler tradition. Spectator behavior should be spirited, respectful and reflect the best qualities of our Loyola culture. Our Jesuit mission demands that we exhibit integrity and class at all times.

Information about live streaming Friday's game will be shared when it becomes available from New Trier.

#goramblers #LAathletics

Sounds like the game will be streamed.

The high majority of students at Loyola don't come from any single municipality. 'Tis true that Loyola is in Wilmette, but Wilmette is one of several suburbs that feeds into New Trier Township High School. In addition to Wilmette, the suburbs of Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Northfield, and part of Glenview west of Harms Road all belong within New Trier Township.

Loyola draws from many north and northwest suburbs and from all over the north half of Chicago, with Glenview being the suburb that sends more students to Loyola than any other. Approx. one-third of LA students come from Chicago.

Loyola tracks students by zip, but I doubt by public school district. I do not know precisely how many current Ramblers live within the New Trier Township boundaries, but my guess is that it is likely more than 400 and less than 600.
