We will know after this week about Sycamore;) now Hillcrest played Rich Central second game of the year maybe first game of the year not sure, and beat them 27-14 or something like that. We played Rich Central and smoke them 34 to 6 giving up a touchdown in the last 2 minutes without our starting D.. I know it was the beginning of the year and things change. Morris I think is 4a. Could be wrong..and projections have us 6a. Metamora ,Highland(never heard of sorry) and Washington is a city school who has not really played anyone decent other than another city school who has since dropped from top 10. Montini I hear is real good and you can never count out JCA. it will be interesting to see how everything plays out in the next couple weeks.

Again the Montini love! LOL. Let’s see if they are #1 in 5A in 4 weeks after LA, BR and PC. Don’t get me wrong solid team that will go far in 5A and possibly win it all. I’d personally watch out for Hillcrest.

I'm high on hillcrest right now. I think I might like them more than Sycamore and Sterling, but I understand why you would put them at 5

I thought the same ... BUT, I've not seen Highland play either, so I said nothing. They beat Alton - a nice 21-0 victory - and East, a 1-4 8A school who has lost also to Chaminade, ESL and Quincy, which is 4-1.

Have you seen Highland play? If so, what game?

No, I haven’t seen Highland play anyone in person but I’ve seen film, I’m basing this on who they have played and they haven’t played anyone, same as last year, I think they went 9-0 but got knocked out early. Washington is near Peoria, they have a solid team and only have 2 decent teams on there Schedule, Morris and Metamora, they beat Morris who is down this year by a couple of touchdowns, I’m not sure why they have been ranked no1 all year by the AP because I think there are a few schools just as good or better, Montini being one of them. Take this for what it is, just a middle aged man giving my opinion, and my opinion I feel is more knowledgeable than the AP lol we will see come playoff time if Highland deserves a higher ranking.

Have watched every Highland game this year. They are very good and deserve their AP ranking. They were 12-0 last year till losing to Rochester in the semis. Great wide receiver and running back and solid line play. Will be a handful for anybody in the south in 5A.

I like Hillcrest better than Highland, but again I think strength of schedule is a factor, notice I don’t even have Antioc in the top 10? and they have been ranked last 3 weeks. Sterling and Sycamore have very tough conference, just my opinion. Montini has the toughest schedule by far. Would love to see a Sterling/Hillcrest playoff game if that’s possible.

With all due respect to Hillcrest, their schedule so far and going forward is weak. Their South Suburban Blue Division is down with only one other team at better than a .500 level. Their cross-over with the Red Division is no test, because outside of Richards (who they do not play), nothing exists on that side. Hillcrest non-con wins were against 2 Southland Conference schools with records of 3-2 and 0-5. I question how well tooled they will be for a deep run like last year when their regular season opposition was somewhat better.

Morris gave Rochester all they coukd handel in the state final game and went 6-3 in our conference

Just to be on the same page both Highland and Morris lost to Rochester.

I have a ton of respect for Montini but at this point in the season, Montini schedule is the definition of playing nobody yet you have them number 1.

Basing anything on last year's teams for anything in high school is not very sound logic. Alot can change with graduations and underclassmen coming up.

I know, my point was Highland went undefeated in regular season in their conference, Morris went 6-3 in NIB 12 Both lost to Rochester. In a close game, making my point that NIB 12 is a tough conference, If Highland had to play Sterling, Sycamore, Kaneland Dekalb, Geneseo etc.. I don’t think they would be 9-0 in the regular season or 5-0 right now

Love that 5a has a good thread going right now!

I would agree that NIB is looking like a very good 5a conference right now. The only conference that have them beat would be the ESCC and the CCL Blue.

I said it before I find this class so interesting because I believe it really is wide open. Hopefully I will get a good look at Montini this week when they come to Wilmette.

Highland has a beat a 7A team who will make the playoffs, an 8A school that plays tough schools like Edwardsville and ESTL, another 5A school that will make the playoffs. I think they would do just fine in the NIB 12.

So who would you put ahead of them?

What exactly does Montini gain from SterlingWarrior's "opinion" that they're on top of the list?

NOTHING!

You only play the teams on your schedule and those that will be in your class come season end. It's not like you can "prove" they deserve to be #1 by who they beat or didn't beat. Even if you could make a case, it still means NOTHING!

Who in 5A has played anyone of note and beaten them?

Of the top teams shown, JCA probably has played the toughest schedule but of course everything is relative.

I hear these type of statements all the time but none of them ever make any sense to me. Based on your comments Highland shouldn’t be top 10 however you haven’t seen them play.

That is exactly my point when trying to prove someone is undeserving of a ranking. If there is an argument that a 5-0 team should be at number 10 or worse because of who they have played, the same argument can be made for a 5-0 team that is number one. The point is this post is an attempt to discredit the AP however, it has been proven that it is more of a "my opinion poll" versus the "real" 5A top ten. I chose to speak on Highland simply because I am confident that most in the Chicagoland haven't seen all 4 quarters of a Highland game this year. On the other hand, I know there are members that vote in the AP that have.

Not sure what that even means? So if I schedule the five toughest teams in the state and I'm 0-5 is that supposed to count for something?

Responding to your question

Mr. Speed, in all due respect my good man, you always ask questions, then people reply, then you chew them apart for their response. I think you made the right choice in just lurking instead of inquiring. Keep Calm & Love High School football. We should have these shirts made for everyone on the Edgy forums! LOL

There are always teams who are 6-3/ 5/4 that play top tier schedules and do very well in the playoffs. Then there are teams from weaker conferences who are 9-0/8-1 and don’t do great. So it has always been my opinion that your conference plays a huge roll in the type of team you’ll be in the playoffs. Now with that said some teams are just downright good and would be competitive in any conference. I think someone said JCA played the Toughest schedule and I’d agree with that. At the end of the year if JCA makes it to the playoffs they will be a hard out in 5a and same goes for Montini.

I like the philosophy of playing the biggest sons on guns you can and see if you make the playoffs and go from there.

Only problem with that is the linemen usually take a pounding and possibly nothing left in the tank for playoffs. But I see your point. Nothing better then EARNING it.

Exactly, ........and remember everyone that was just my opinion, don’t take it to serious, the guy that thinks Highland plays in a tough conference, that’s your opinion, note however their opponents have 15 total wins after 5 weeks.
