There's a thread on the Spirit about last night's MSU extravaganza

They are saying that they had 800 at their event because it was $20 per person. They are saying that we had 3,400 because it was free to enter and the first 3,000 got a free t-shirt. They are failing to see that it cost $10 to get into the MSU event last night (students and kids free). I thought the turnout was great and the convention center is extremely nice.

I like riling those sensitve effers up as much as anybody but they've been spending an extraordinary amount of time over here lately defending the flagship's honor. Let's not give them more motivation, I don't know how much more of bruiser and bydamn I can stand.

Every year it is the same thing. State's summer get to together draws 2500-3000. Ole Miss draws 800-1000.

I don't know where OM had it this year but generally they have it at the country club which is not as inviting to the public as the coliseum or the convention center.

To me it just shows how badly MSU fans want to win and that a ticket at Scott Field will be impossible to get once we get back on track.

It's the quality! Although we put 3,400 fans at our party, they have 800 that are just cooler people than us at theirs.

Say you take your wife and two kids to the MSU event with food and t-shirts: $20.00

Cost for me to take my wife and two kids with food and a kick in the nuts: $60.00

Your event is in a new facility, ours is in a dump.

You believe that your football team should break through with it's second winning season in the last 10 years. We just came off back to back New Years Day Bowls for the first time in 40 years and know that it should be a rebuilding year.

You beat your in-state rival last year. We did not.

Your fan base craves these type events. Ours could give a **** for some reason.

But I say kudos for the big turn out.

as long as I can remember (sorry, but UMC doesn't count). That translates into more graduates and more fans.

It is like this virtually every year, irregardless of record. We had crowds of around 3000 even with Croom at the helm. How do you figure our "fan base craves these type events"?

Not that this counts as an excuse for the entire fanbase, but to some degree it starts from the top and goes down. Our 17'n AD was interviewed earlier this summer and spoke matter of factly about how we're not going to sell as many season tickets this year. He wasn't rallying support and trying to encourage every single person to renew their tickets. He wasn't upbeat about it at all. Just "Yeah it looks like we're gonna be about 1,500 short of last year".

He is an absolutely terrible leader, and I think the fans respond to that at events like this. We know it's gonna be the exact same **** as last year with nothing new or exciting. No five, ten, or twenty year plan to unveil. Nothing to reach out to fans that aren't already "in the club". Just the status quo at $20 a pop.

if he takes his wife, it is $40.00 to your $60.00.

You guys, as an alumni group, are WAY more wealthy than us, so pony up the extra bill.

Therefore, with my $4 hot dog and $2 Coke I spent $16. And yes, that was the cheapest option.

I believe Ole Miss'admission covers food and drink. In the end, I don't think price is a motivating factor.

MSU's is marketed to the average fan. UM's is marketed to the elite donors. I've never understood why they do that and I think they're making a big mistake. Not that every alumni/fan event should be for the masses, but having one in Jackson right before football season starts is a great way to build enthusiasm and support. I've also never understood why they don't play a basketball game in Jackson every year. They'd apparently rather draw 1,000 for a December game in Oxford than 4,000-5,000 in Jackson. I know the Coliseum's a dump, but that game is still great for MSU fans and recruits every December.

I agree with that. As much as we rag on Alabama for all their fans that never set foot on campus for a class, that's part of what makes them such a good program.

We could use some of that to help our program out.

As far as your basketball suggestion, Kennedy has started doing that, trying to schedule a game in Jackson, one in Desoto, etc. as much as possible during Christmas break. It depends on how the schedule breaks out, but after his first or second year, he decided he didn't want to play many traditional home games during Christmas break, because we can't get any fans for Morgan State on December 17.

There's no such thing as a bad fan (Brad Lott types aside). And yeah, I have noticed that you usually play a game in Southaven most years lately. How is the attendance there? We played there once and it wasn't any better than a game in Starkville would be.

With some schools I would agree but most of the "walk-on" fans Ole Miss has are doing so BECAUSE of all the things Ole Miss is trying to get rid of now. I seem to remember some of their non-alumni fans in white sheets last year (or was that the year before, I'm getting old) classing up the campus. Would I like some fans from Mississippi who just like State because it's a fun place to hang out? Sure. But I don't want the idiot redneck douchebags who Ole Miss gets based on some outdated concept of what the school is about. There is such thing as a bad fan.

The majority of the uneducated truly neck in this state pull for Ole Miss. They do so because of the racial symbolic component and a generational Archie effect. Ole Miss alum just do not want to admit these people are their brethern much lessmingle with them. MSU has em' too, but to a much lesser extent and when you are putting between 3 -4,000 at an event you don't really see them. For Ole Miss though, with a much smaller crowd, it would cast a long shadow.

Her absence was felt by all. I personally think that is why we were out at 8:00, that and a pithy Fanning.

A lot of people that I went to high school with are big time rednecks and are huge Ole Miss fans. These people are your typical tatted up trailer park type that will have a wife beater on with an Ole Miss cap. These type of people would be escorted out of the Grove on gameday. Without a shadow of a doubt, they pull for Ole Miss because of the old south will rise again mentality. These people also couldn't find Oxford on google maps on an Iphone.

If memory serves, the game vs. Southern Miss down in Biloxi at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum was sparsely attended.

Same goes for this past season at the game against UTEP up in Southaven. For what it's worth, I was told that the arena up there is really nice.

including MSU, and I have always wondered how that's possible. Why would someone from Alaska, or Hawaii, or even somewhere like Idaho ever choose State or Ole Miss as his/her college of choice? It just doesn't seem very logical to me.

It's just a fact that Ole Miss has many more redneck sidewalk fans. Maybe the Elite Alums don't want them at their event, and therefore keep them priced out.
