How the mighty have fallen. When i was a kid i remember my dad and one of his friends, who was a big MSU guy, talking about how he had to go to get Bill Burgin's ok on the design of the Hump. Burgin said no, cause it was going to be bigger than Tad Smith. For those of you younger than me, Burgin was a power broker in the legislature and UM grad and supporter who went to jail for corruption. Not that any of that matters, but my point is that today UM got turned down by Southern Miss's football coach, PAUSE A MINUTE AND LET THAT SINK IN...... their football, basketball programs are in disarray, their influence in the legislature is smalland shrinking, the only statewide elected officials are Cochran (who is on his way out) Hood (anembarrassment) and Lynn Finch. there may be another, but that's all i could think of. Not to mention their crown jewel, the Medical Center, that is losing $300+ million a year. Things could turn around for them, but i just don't see it happening anytime soon.
