Things I've learned on the sixpack that make me shake my head

Russell is the worst QB we've ever had. Worse than Kyle York, Henig, Ty Evans, Tray Rutland, Josh Riddell, etc.

Mullen winning 2/3 of his games in year 4 in the toughest conference in America while staying relatively clean is comparable to Stansbury winning 2/3 of his games in year 12 in a weak conference while players are fighting in the stands wearing wife-beater t-shirts.

Our program is at the same point now that it was under Croom.

Dillon Day should be starting at right tackle next year (actually learned that on Genespage, but it fits right in with the above)

It's a fact of life about MSU...

...MSU fans love the backup QB more than the starter.

I'm convinced that our problems lie within ourselves, and always have. Not Ole Miss, not Slive, not Alabama, not the NCAA, not the refs, not the media, not ESPN. Those appear to be evil because we allow ourselves to be subjected to it. The overall low self esteem of MSU football just permeates. The symptoms are clear: Unrealistic expectations based on nothing, emotional drivel, attacking our own, constant self comparisons to others, worrying more about perception than reality, etc. etc. etc.

I do think Mullen's track record compares to Stansbury BS (Before Sidney)

I think that is fair to say. However, I just don't think we can totally give up on a guy after 4 years and 3 bowls. My opinion on Stansbury was different in year 12 than it was in year 4. I think a guy deserves a chance to see if he can get us over the hump. Stansbury got his chance.

No doubt. It's just funny to read Coach34 defend Mullen when he is setting up to be just like BS Stansbury.

Bingo.

We need perspective. We need to be All In like Auburn. These things make a big difference.

To be fair, Mullen did a good job of unifying the fanbase in 2009. We need to get back to that. More Road Dawg stops if that's what it takes.

In this case, if Mullen keeps the offense he is using with Tyler, MSU fans may be correct. Tyler is a pro-type QB-he can't run very well and doesn't need to be in that type offense. On the other hand, Prescott would appear to fit into it perfectly.

I always said this about Stans and now I'm going to say it about Mullen.

You can't just look at records. You gotta look at how you're winning and how you're losing. Nobody with an ounce of objectivity can debate that this season was a disappointment. The overall record is fine, but the devil is in the details. We weren't competitive in four SEC losses, including the last one, against a team that we should've been able to handle. We have 8 wins, but none of significance. And a couple of those wins were less than impressive.

We could've gone 8-4 with much better effort, and the season would have a totally different feel.

I used to get blasted on here when I bitched about a three point win against LSU in basketball. "It's just a win, blah, blah blah." No, the devil is in the details. Wins and losses are important, but showing improvement year over year is more important. Mullen's first year, that team that went 5-7, would've done better than the team we had this year. They would've at least beaten Ole Miss.

He is trending in that direction. Admittedly though, it is much tougher to make that leap into top 3-4 in the SEC in football than it is basketball. Top 3-4 in SEC football means top 5-10 in the country. Top 3-4 in basketball could mean slightly outside the top 25. While going 8-4, we still looked like a team that is a long way from lining up with the big boys (see whippings by Alabama and Texas A&M).

Tom Brady plays in very similar formations to what we ran this year and last I checked he wasn't doing half bad. You don't have to run the read-option just because you're lined up in the spread. Mullen just needs to install more pro-style-like quick slants and combo routes to take advantage of Russell's short to mid-range accuracy instead of having him try to sling it around the field to receivers running routes based on the threat of a running QB. The spread formation isn't the problem; it's the scheme.

If he continues in that direction, then he will get called out on it. But basketball and football are an apples to oranges comparision, especially when you factor in that we have a much better history in basketball than football

He also uses Gronk and Hernandez unlike our 4 TE targets per game

2009 and 2010 had better line play. That and that alone is the difference between then and 2011/2012. I'm glad we structured the schedule the way we did to take up the slack. The line recruiting from the 2010 classes and on is about to show up consistently.
