Actually, Dunkirk was a victory for the British and French. The German tanks could've simply driven in and captured the whole British Expeditionary Force and French. However, Hermann Goering insisted his Luftwaffe could do the job. Hitler held up the tanks, and let the Luftwaffe do the job. Though the Germans inflicted a lot of damage, they let the bulk of the Allies escape the beach and get to England. The heart of that force came back over 4 years later on D-Day.
