Third & fourth hand rumor info on AU situation

A friend of mine who is a huge AU fan just called me. One of his good friends, we will call him Jack, is very connected with the AU football program . Jack is on the sidelines for every home game & many of the road games with the AU team. Jack, who was at the MSU game this fall on the sidelines, told my friend that he met John Bond at the MSU game this year. They were talking about this story then. Supposedly Bond told Jack that tapes exist of Cecil Newton saying that they got $180K for Newton to go to AU. Jack also said that Bond texted him recently & told him that Meyer is indeed behind the story getting out to the NYT. Jack also said that the NYT and maybe some other sources are sitting on the tapes until the week of the Iron Bowl.

Like I said, this is all obviously third & fourth hand info. That said, I know that my friend trusts Jack and believes that Jack would have no reason to lie to him.

I have a feeling that this is all really going to blow up in the next couple of weeks.

If the New York Times (or any other media outlet) did in fact have tapes, why would they sit on them? I'm fairly certain that the NY Times doesn't really care about the Iron Bowl that much - unless some muckety-muck there is a Bama grad.

And it the tapes existed and multiple media outlets had them, you'd think they'd be falling all over themselves to release the tapes first - not colluding to withhold them until the week of a rivalry game.

farfetched, but you never know. I can't imagine that Bond would tell this guy about tapes if they existed. After listening to finebaum, I do think that meyer is involved to some extent. I also agree that there is alot more to come by the way some of these people are talking.

Bond said there is more to come, per someone who talked with Bond yesterday. Again, probably just another rumor.

The only timing the media cares about is being the first to break a story. We would have known about them already if they were in media hands. If there are tapes, they are in the hands of the NCAA.

can talk objectively about this situation? Because I haven't seen a reasonable Auburn fan since this story broke. They are actually getting their feelings hurt about it and getting personally pissed amongst themselves. So forgive me if I don't believe your story. Cecil said he already "got" 180K? Before he signed? You don't just drop off money with no guarantee.

Like I've said in other threads, if the NCAA/Media had tapes of Newton taking money, or even mentioning money.. Cameron Newton would not be playing football right now at Auburn..

In this day and age anything goes lets just ask Brett. Hell two years later and this **** comes out. I don't believe ESPN / any one else came out with such a large splash with just poor old John Bonds story. I'm like most of you all I don't believe most of this crap except 21's jugs bouncing but I do believe ESPN has something in their whole card.

We know money is moving around, Cecil is what he is, waiting for his sons draft, the one thing he didn't figure on was his son being up for the Heisman. He will cost his boy the Heisman and one hell of allot of respect when its all said and done.....

and I've already played 9 games with Newton, what is the point in keeping him out? <div>
</div><div>If he is ruled ineligible, at best they are 3-0 with 9 wins vacated</div><div>
</div><div>If he keeps playing and we go 14-0, we get about $25 million for the BCS title game (keep half, the rest goes to the SEC for distribution) plus revenue from all the national championship merchandise</div><div>
</div><div>
</div><div>So if I'm Auburn and I'm guilty, I play Cam regardless, I'm screwed either way, but I have an assload of money if I run with him.</div><div>

Not that it really matters and I could be wrong, but I don't think it works like that. I think bowl revenue is divided into 14 parts. The SEC gets one part, the school that plays in the game gets two parts and the other 11 league schools get one part each as part of the annual SEC revenue sharing.

At least that's the way I think it used to work.

My friend is a huge AU fan (though he is a sidewalk alum like 90% of everyone else in the state), and just like the rest of the fans he is pissed as he can be. He is griping, whining, & complaining. I will say though that he isn't blaming State for turning AU in.

Also, I never said anything about Cecil saying he had the money before Cam signed with AU. I just said that I was told that tapes existed.

As for whether you believe it or not, I really don't care especially coming from you. Also, I never said that the information was true. I said it was a rumor based on third & fourth hand info from a guy who is well connected to the AU team. I mentioned that the source of the info is one that my friend trusts, but that doesn't mean I'm taking it as cold hard fact.

Bottom line, I heard a rumor today from someone who knows someone who is connected to AU who had shared a rumor about the situation. End of story.

Bowl revenue is divided 14 ways and if Auburn is found guilty they will have to pay that back if i am not mistaken

This story just recently surfaced in the media, but Bond talked in detail to this guy on September 9.

That is the story I've been told. Yes, it just came out in the media, but it had been reported to the SEC in 12/09 & again in 07/10 by then. So, it was nine months old by the time the game was played. We have no way of knowing for sure, but Bond probably knew that some sort of investigation was under way or in the process of starting by the time the game was played.

Sounds like they first met that day, is this correct?

Honestly, I have no idea. That is the way the story was told to me, but that was my friend re-telling the story. I have no idea how long "Jack" has been involved with the AU football team. I guess it is possible that he had met Bond before if he has been involved with the team for some time.

I don't know if I buy it entirely either, but I thought it was an interesting rumor to share & talk about. The one thing that lends some creedence to the story to me is the fact that "Jack" has such insider access to the AU football team. If it was a guy that was close to Bama, UF, UT, or some other SEC school, I would probably totally dismiss it.

The two MSU people were running a scam! The truth will probably come out this week. According to him Auburn has been on top of this and there is nothing to it.

If the Times has the tapes and are waiting, the reason would not be because of an Alabama grad just trying help his team. It would be because there are a lot of people expecting to make a lot of money on the game when Bammer upsets Awbun. Said tapes are released causing mass hysteria and uncertainty; the football team, and Gene Chizik, will have one hell of a time thinking about it, or rather, trying NOT to think about it during the game as the 'bama players will continuously remind them of it. The coaching of Gene Chizik will actually be tested and, as expected by many, he will fail. All the weasels at the Times whom have made lucrative bets walk away with big smiles and big pockets...The Tigers again leave the Iron Bowl in tears and their season is taken back anyway.
