similar to us. I think they were doing the billboard smack modeled after what we have been doing. And we had the twitter hashtag idea get reused. Our marketing team needs to keep plugging ahead with the ideas

One of the best parts about all this stupid **** is that some state fans think you're the first to use "billboard smack" or "this is our"... The question is, after you step back and take 30 seconds to rationally think about it, do you still believe that?

Please tell me my sarcasm meter is broken

The funny thing about this to me is you and a lot of other OM fans that I know very well can't figure out that this isn't stupid. It is marketing and the marketing is actually working very well for our fan base. Instead it is somehow beneath you guys because OM is so damn desirable of a place that the only marketing that you deem "classy" is necessary.

for heismantrophycandidates. And I really don't give a 17 if another school did it first, because I love the way it gets under your skin.

in the Clarion Ledger this week, that is where the "rubber meets the road". The side benefit is that it drives most Bears absolutely 17ing<div>crazy, which is hilarious.</div>

But what is beyond moronic homer delusion is beating your chest and having so much pride in your marketing campaign that you have fans who literally believe you came up with "this is our" marketing... That's what's ridiculous. It's a nice thing don't getme wrong, but good Lord, you didnt invent effective or adversarial sports marketing

came up with most of the marketing tactics that we are using right now is a bit out there though. Billboards, slogans, etc. were around a long time before we started using them effectively. I'm damn glad we are doing that now.

usually a mutation of something that came before it. I think you are "overthingking" this issue. It is what it is, an effective Marketing campaign.

Hey, my point isn't whether it's a good marketing campaign. It's that there is a lot of over zealousness from State fan's regarding it's impact. Other than irritating OM fans, which I know makes it worth it to many of you, I bet the impact isnt really that substantial.

But that's all beside the point. You didnt invent adversarial sports marketing or "this is our..." saying so is beyond ridiculous, and I think this thread shows you have fans who literally think that.

see Under Armour's "this is our house" campaign as one example. And to those saying you came up with this is our state, I can assure you that's wrong, even though you might be the first to use it as a school adopted "motto"... At the same time the original poster linked a "this is our time" tshirt which is what led to my post

There's one word difference between the two phrases and their meaning is almost identical.

If someone from State was Googling marketing ideas, catch phrases, smack billboards, etc and ran across the phrase "This is OUR time" it is entirely conceivable that they would get the idea to change it to "This is OUR state" based on our rivalry. I'm not suggesting that this is how the Our State thing started. I'm simply suggesting that you are incorrect about the relation between Our State and Our Time slogans. They are VERY related.

I fully conceded that it's more likely that someone at State came up with the Our State thing completely independently of the Our Time slogan, but your point is still incorrect because the two are extremely related and the derivation of Our State from Our Time is very possible, although improbable in this particular case.

I was just saying I don't think Florida State looked at the "This is Our State" campaign and said "hey, we need to copy this". I have a feeling they just made it up on their own without using State's campaign as guidance. Plus, "This is our time" is pretty generic and has been used many times before.

And we agree about how FSU arrived at their slogan, but we can also agree that Our State and Our Time slogans are very, very closely related and similar if viewed in a vacuum.

NC State is also using the "This is OUR State" advertising scheme. Just started it a few months ago, I believe. It's getting mixed reviews here, but that's to be expected since the community is divided among three competing schools.

Jones is going to fight hard to hire a young energetic guy with fresh ideas. Like Greg Byrne or Scott Striclin types. He'll have a hard time with the old guard though. Not making a prediction - just saying TSUN will attempt to reshape their athletic department based on our resounding success in recent years.

I can see very few similarities between these two campaigns besides three very common words, "This", "Is", and "Our".... and they don't even caps lock the "OUR" like us (which, although on the surface seems minor, it's really a defining characteristic of our slogan). "This is our time" is a very generic, common phrase (as DS pointed out). It's equivalent to "Let's do this" or "Here we go". It's been used many times before... as opposed to "This is OUR State". Also, of course.... "State" and "Time" imply totally different ideas.

As for the ludicrous idea that our marketing team, even possibly, derived our slogan from this... I guess that's technically a true statement, but I guess it's also possible that God himself handed the slogan to our AD atop Mount Sinai. A much more probably scenario is that we derived our slogan from "This is our house", which is common in sports, and conveys the same territorial idea of our current slogan.

....is when Arkansas State changed the mascot to Red Wolves, they put up billboards all over central and northern Arkansas. The UofArkansas people paid it no attention. I would say the UofArk does NOT have sand in their *** over it.
