Those 18-12 SEC seasons will be 20-10 there, and with LSU across their chest that equals a Top 4 national seed and easier path to Omaha. The Ole Miss media is setting the Ole Miss fan base for a let down if anyone other than McDonnell or Godwin is their coach in 2022. Whether it's Bianco or a new coach not named Dan or Cliff, they will be very disappointed. The Spirit guy and the Rebel Grove guys have stated very clearly that they fully expect LSU to hire Bianco and they don't expect the Ole Miss search to get past the top-2 candidates. One of them said that he was talked down from 76% likelihood to 65% likelihood that McDonnell would be the Ole Miss coach in 2022. Maybe they're right, but the way they talk about it with such a level of certainty makes me think this is heading towards a rug pull.

The things I don't understand:

1. Why would LSU (top-5 job) hire a guy Ole Miss fans want to get rid of and think they are better without?
2. Why would McDonnell (a top-5 coach according to some) turn down LSU (top-5 job) and then take the Ole Miss job?
3. If Godwin is an upgrade over Bianco, why doesn't LSU hire Godwin?

The best answer I've heard for the first question is that LSU is in a position of needing to hire a squeaky clean coach due to non-baseball athletics department issues and Bianco is the best squeaky clean coach available.

The best explanation I've heard for the second question is that McDonnell has coached at Ole Miss previously and has a child in school there.

The best explanation I've heard for the third question is similar to the first question. Godwin is single and that apparently is hurting his candidacy.

I don't get why they are so dead set on this sidegrade. There's one name I pray doesn't end up in Oxford, and it's not McDonnell, and he's 100% more gettable.

I think you could very, very well be right. I know I certainly went into the offseason expecting Bianco to be our coach next year. And now, if he is, I’ll support him, but I won’t lie, it’ll feel a little disappointing.

The only caveat I’ll add, is the Spirit and Rival guys aren’t saying that’s what will happen, they’re saying based on all the sources they have, including those outside of Ole Miss (and that’s important) are telling them these are the likely outcomes. They aren’t predicting it, in fact they’re saying they think there’s a strong chance Bianco is back. But they are saying if they had to lay money down that they’d lay it on those things happening. Well.. something can be a 1 in 5 shot, and be the way to bet. But then when that 4 in 5 hits, people scream that the guy who told them it was a 20% shot is wrong. So, yes fans will be pissed, but they aren’t listening, if they are. That’s the nature of the beast.

If ya'll end up with McDonnell, I will not be happy as a State fan. He's had a few teams that could have won it all at Louisville. Did they have any sort of success before he got there? And yes, it would be a win win for LSU and Ole Miss if ya'll got McDonnell.

Answer to number 1 is simple.

The admin at LSU and most places are way smarter and less emotional than dumb fans. Fact.

Bianco is a phenomenal coach. Just Bc you don’t win it all or don’t make the top 8 every year doesn’t mean you aren’t good.

Bianco’s resume is 1000% better than Stansburys from day 1 until today. (Stans at msu)

I think that’s part of the hope. That and just the timing of it with his situation at Louisville. He loved Tom Zurich (sp?) who was the AD who hired him and invested in the program and gave him complete control. Supposedly the new AD doesn’t see the value in investing in baseball and him and McDonnell don’t see eye to eye. Plus we all saw the video of him openly expressing his frustrations with COVID protocols. He didn’t sugarcoat it.

The hope, maybe pipe dream, is that the timing would be right. With Bianco leaving on his own, leaving a very talented roster, and Ole Miss coming in strong with a 4 year $6M+ offer.

I’ll be honest, I don’t see why he’d leave after turning down other premium jobs, but the rumors are that his wife loved Oxford (I mean doesn’t everyone who’s ever even drove through it, according to our fan base?), and they still have a lot of friends here because of the relationship with Bianco’s. The guy above who said those that cover Ole Miss are setting it up for upset fans is probably right, though. I’d have never thought McDonnell would be a legit candidate. But pretty much everyone covering the search is saying they’d be shocked if it got beyond McDonnell or Godwin. Including those that don’t like to agree and don’t just pump sunshine.
