This was a shocking stat - this is the first time since 1970 that Ole Miss is...

Wasn't there a year where Felker started like 5-0 and finished 5-6? I could just be making that up...

1986. Started 6-1, including wins over Syracuse & Tennessee. Got blown out in our last 4 games (Bama, Auburn, LSU & Mississippi) to finish 6-5. A guy I grew up with was playing DB for LSU at the time. That game got to the point that me & my buddy at the game just said, 17 it, we're just going to start cheering for Mike whenever he makes a play.

We used to play Auburn or Bama as our first or second game, that eliminated like 4/5s of those years.

Hey that got me to thinking and love looking up stuff like that. You are misremembering big time tho. Y'all only played Bama 9 times (if I added right) as a first 4 game, much less a first or second game, since 1970. Not sure but thinking you only played Auburn a few maybe 3 times as a first game. But Bama you only played them 9 times in 44 years as a first 4 game. When you add Auburn it's still only like 20, 21 games in the first 4 games of the season and that was mostly the 1990's Auburn teams that some were pretty average. So not even half much less 4/5's were Auburn or Alabama games in the first 4 games of the season. Y'all played some good Arkansas teams a lot for the second game of the year in the 1980's. But you had at least 10 more years that were some pretty weak first 4 opponents. Especially in the 2000's.

I defy someone to find a worse 4 game stretch in MSU history. Outscored 144-12 in those games.

I was at the Syracuse game as a Sr in highschool (Outbof state) visiting MSU for the first time. Can't remember if we've ever played them again.

It led up to the most exciting egg bowl I think any of us will ever see. That peach bowl was a pretty good win too.

The end of the 2003 season we were outscored 267-57 in our last 6 games. In 2004, we lost 5 straight. Didn't get outscored too terribly bad, but lost to Maine, 2-9 Vandy, and UAB.

I'm still taking 1986. Coincidentally, that Auburn game was the last time there was a top 15 matchup involving MSU.

I think he's saying we were shooting for 8-0 in 2012. But I thought the same way you did.

The point is that how you start means nothing until you beat somebody.

We haven't don't **** yet, similar to how ya'll hadn't done **** in 2012. 4-0 or 7-0 is strictly a function of scheduling, so to point out that OM hasn't been 4-0 since whatever is clearly just trolling the OM fans. If we played a bunch of **** bags to start every year, we would have many more 4-0 starts.

1986 wins because we turned down a bowl game invitation at 6-1, then had no offers at 6-5. That decision led to the firing of Charlie Carr as AD, and entered us into the era of...Larry Templeton. So yes, 1986 is the worst, by far.

Didn't we pass on Steve Spurrier to be head coach the year before?

So in 40 years - it's a function of scheduling. Got it.

In the years we started off 4-0...

1999 - beat Oklahoma State
2012 - didn't play anyone tough
2014 - beat LSU

Don't recall which one. Seems like Independence. Carr thought we would do better after winning another game or two.

So how did you not go 4-0 in 1999 while we were going 8-0?

Oh that's right, you lost to Vandy. If only you had an easier schedule you would have done it sooner. I see.

I thought it was pretty obvious I wasn't being statistically accurate. I will say for high school, college, and immediate post college it was Auburn 10 out of 12. Then a few Tx Techs and Memphis losses. The 2000s also include Cut and Ogre.

Basically they need the "juggernut" of Vandy moved to the backend of the schedule.

Well I guess I'm just dense as well. I am not getting what he was trying to say and how it's relevant.

And btw, I went back and checked and UM has played either Alabama or Auburn as a first or second game of the season a grand total of 11 times in 44 years. That 4/5's looks a lot more like 1/4 if my math is correct. And they haven't played either one as a 1st or 2nd game since 2004.

Yeah I understand, but you saying 4/5's is 80% and if it was any percentage over 50% you wouldn't have been called out by me. But you were not being accurate when it was actually only 25% of the time that you played Alabama or Auburn as a first or second game (Alabama only 3 times since 1970) then it's you making a pretty false statement. Probably because of all of the times you played Auburn in the 1990's, but still that's way off. And you are still off as it is 11 times total since 1970. You played Auburn 6 times in 1990's. Auburn in 2000 and 2001 then Alabama in 2004 for the first time since 1977. Nothing since.

I almost put in my reply, that our problem is that Vandy keeps beating us.

Clearly we had a Vandy problem for quite a while. I hope Freeze will cure that.

Interesting ...

1986 wins because we turned down a bowl game invitation at 6-1, then had no offers at 6-5.

& been going to games since early 60's and have never heard this before. I know that Bowls send out committee members to talk to teams and jockey for the 'best' teams. But, I never heard of any bowls making offers in the middle of October. And, I never heard that State had a Bowl offer and turned it down.

Sure would like to learn more about this.
