I may be a little late getting started with this, but hopefully some of you will have the time to chime in. We can even make it a little contest if you want, albeit a loosely-organized one that might only end up with an unofficial winner.

There are three playoff games in our area Friday night, Lee hosting East Rock and Gap hosting Draft on the 2-A level and Riverheads hosting Altavista in 1-A. So let's see who can come the closest to predicting the winners and scores of those three games. Here we go:

East Rock at Lee: As we have touched upon in other threads, this one looks on paper to be an offensive explosion. So if I were you guys, I would not predict a defensive struggle. Instead expect a ton of scoring in this one. I say R E Lee wins 51-35.

Stuarts Draft at Buffalo Gap: These teams met earlier, also at the Gap, and the Bison won by one score. I am not sure how healthy the Cougars were at that time, but when they played RHS in the season finale, they had both running backs break a big one. I expect this to be the closest of the three games and I will go with the Bison by a 34-28 count. But another playoff road upset by the visitors would not surprise me.

Altavista at Riverheads: This is of course the harder one to predict because we don't have any common opponents. It is easy to be influenced by RHS' perfect record compared to Altavista's losing record. But then until proven differently, the Colonels are the state champs and that says something. We also don't know how one team's schedule might compare to the other. For all we know, Riverheads may have struggled as well against AHS' schedule. I am of course biased, but I think the first half will be tight but that Riverheads will make whatever adjustments they need to at the break and will pull out a 42-19 win. (I don't even know if Altavista kicks PAT's as opposed to going for two every time.)

Your picks sound good to me. I'll be at the Lee-East Rock game, Lee can make a big play on offense, but has a tendency to give them up on D. I didn't attend the Wilson-ER game, how was Wilson able to hold ER to 14 points? If was Lee's defensive coordinator, that's the film I'd be wanting to see.

Lee over ER 49-14
Gap big over SD 56-14
RHS over AHS 35-14

Lee has a much more athletic secondary than Wilson so I have faith in their play. ER can run but not effective enough to be a threat in this game.

Gap has a lot of size and will control both lines. Second half, size trumps speed in a big way.

RHS runs a similar offense to William Campbell which hung 500+ yds on Altavista so that's what I took into account. Looking at film they are not as fast as in previous years but that's why they play the games.

For all of these teams there is a chance. At least they are still playing in the second round. This time of year it's about surviving and advancing. A win by one sends you to the next round so I will take that any day. Good luck to all and safe travels for the road teams.

Well Red Pride Nation, it looks like it was just you and me kid and I think we have to call it a draw. We were both pleasantly surprised by RHS' shutout of Altavista, so that one is a wash. I correctly predicted that Gap and Draft would be a one-score game, whereas you correctly nailed Lee's bombing of East Rock. The important thing is that we know our stuff!

Gotta say all three games surprised me but all in different ways. The Lee game because ER was a little more effective than I thought they would be. The Red Teams game because we typically are a little rusty after a bye, and the near perfectly played game by our D. As for the Gap game, well I will be nice and just say they were more evenly matched than I anticipated. Neither D to me in the couple of games I seen them play were THIS good. Of course match ups make "fights" or so the saying goes.

I will go on record on this thread first, Lee will beat Clarke in Berryville handily, Greenville will give Gap a game and may pull off the upset in Swoope, and RHS will win a closer game than is comfortable at the Hay Field against a fired up Lunenburg team. Can't wait until next week, good games in the area again.
