Just discussing this with one of our younger sales associates on the staff at my Dealership. He's sort of "A"-political....leans a little Left but also has problems with the radical loons in the Democrat party. Not really a Republican, but still wants to get rich, own a home, and have a family. Hates Trump personally, but likes his policies.
So then we asked him, what makes the Democrat party appeal to so many young folks like him? Surprisingly he said he didn't know? He was being honest too! Got me to thinking, I came across this piece in "Reason" magazine not too long ago discussing this very issue. Why are folks, particularly on the Left, so easily manipulated to vote Democrat?
It's long, but very interesting. I've excerpted a couple of lines just to encourage you all to read it in its entirety and maybe gain a little more awareness into what makes our friend @moe tick?
Political Ignorance and Misinformation on the Left
excerpt:
In a democracy, those who govern are accountable to a mass public that overwhelmingly comprises people who don't think much about politics and policy and who really don't know much about it. That real-world citizens are not idealized deliberators is a really important aspect of how society functions, and it's important that everyone who cares about such things try to understand it….
more
The thing that makes this sort of superficial analysis so seductive is that it's not exactly wrong. Most people really are very poorly informed about politics and policy. A lot of campaign messaging is pretty misleading. A lot of media coverage is sloppy and propagandistic.
Overall, social science research suggests that susceptibility to misinformation cuts across the political spectrum, and isn't necessarily much greater on one side of it than the other. The fundamental problem is that most voters have little incentive to seek out information about policy issues, or to objectively evaluate what they learn.
Again folks, it's a very interesting read and looks closely at a few issues like "climate change" and "racial profiling" revealing how both are reported and the perceptions that follow those misperceptions. It's balanced, and doesn't only pick on Leftists...but it does explain how many of them get duped into thinking the exact opposite of what they instinctively know to be true!
Amazing.
Give it a read, I promise it will open your eyes...and maybe even provide a little sympathy for @moe because I can easily see him in so much of what the authors revealed in their analysis.
