Thoughts on MSU and the spread

From the KV blog entry, it sounds like we're going to run the pass first spread a la Texas Tech, Hawaii, Cincinnati, etc.

How does our personnel fit in that offense? Well, first of all, it will probably be easier to learn and it seems like the players want to run that system, so I think will make a big difference right there.

Now, our personnel:

QB- For once, I think we will be OK here. Tyson Lee ran this in JUCO, so I think he has an edge there. He is smart and mobile, he'll be fine. If he's not, Carroll is a capable back-up and a new offense like this could give him a shot in the arm. Both have played in the SEC and have won SEC games. Now, if Tyler Russell comes in and sets the world on fire and beats both of them out, that would be fine. I certainly wouldn't rule him out. He is taller and looks like a pro QB. His height is an advantage, but at the same time, if we RS him that would be fine to. My wildcards here are Chris Relf, and maybe even Chris Garrett. We'll see about Garrett.

O-line- This is going to be a problem. We have one SEC caliber o-lineman right now- Derreck Sherrod. JC Brignone is close, but is below average. We are small, and just not very good. So, we really need to find three JUCO o-linemen that can come in and play. Hopefully the spread can help us mask our deficiencies here somewhat because they won't have to block as long, hopefully. But unless we go get some JUCO o-linemen this is going to be a problem for a year or two. That's another reason why I think Tyson Lee has an advantage.

WR- This is our second big problem, but is not as worriesome to me as the o-line. We return Delmon Robinson and Arceto Clark at WR. They could be good slot receivers in the spread, and are probably going to have a chance to be very important next year. As for now, though we really need O'Neal Wilder to step up. He has pro-size at 6'5" 195 but of course the question is "can he catch"? If he can't, we're going to have to hope that we land Pat Patterson and Bumphis and that they both can come in and grow up quickly. We have some other guys like Chris Smith that could surprise. Since we won't be using TE's as much, I think it's prudent to switch Marcus Green to WR and maybe Brandon Henderson. That said, a guy that could be a wild card is Robert Elliott- if his knee is healthy. Another guy that might be switched over is Tojo Patterson. We're going to have to be creative here, but I think we can pull it off.

RB- This is probably our strength on offense. Dixon is going to have to learn how to get to the corner and not tip toe if we're going to run this. He should be good on draws and inside runs, and he also catches the ball pretty well. Draw plays are Ducre's specialty, and he could very well end up starting. Elliott fits the spread the best of any RB we have, but you have to wonder about his health. Arnill Stallworth could also end up starting, and you could make an arguement that he's our best all around back. Montrell Conner is likely to RS, but like Russell, I don't think you can quite rule him out depending on his performance.

Final thoughts- I'm excited about this. I think we will do better running this offense, and while there certainly are some question marks, I think that we can either answer those questions or mask any problems that we may have. I think this will be like UK when Mumme was there. Even after Couch left, it was a pain to play them because you knew going in that they were going to put points on the board. I think that we will have a product that our fans will like and now maybe our air raid siren will make sense rather than playing it on a Dixon one yard plunge after we failed to get in on the first two tries. Of course, the pundits will say that this type of offense forces your defense to stay on the field too long. My retort that our defense should be used to that after the Croom era. The difference now is maybe our offense can bail them out for a change.

It can be done.

Now, as to why we immediately went back to the West Croom Offense on the first series against Mississippi -- well, I guess we'll never know. Thank god.

I don't believe Lee or Carroll can throw an accurate pass of any distance over 5 yards. The times that Croom actually allowed either of them to throw the ball over ten yards it awful. Half the time the ball was not within 10 yards of the intended receiver. I am all for running the spread but I am not sure that there is an offense that has been created or in development that can be successful with the crew of athletes that I have watched on the field this year. We don't have the line, we have a wuss for a running back and our qb's don't have the talent to win the starting spot at several high schools in the state. We need a coach 1st and foremost and then we need this recruiting class to be very good.

Yeah I think if you can give Lee a little protection he can definitely make the throws.

..will be a bust @MSU until some WR's are recruited.

Croom handed a bunch of 2 star "diamonds in the rough" a Green Bay Packer playbook & said: "Memorize this; this is the offense we are going to run." That's like hiring coach34 to be the linebackers coach at Wake Forest.

If Croom would have run a Georgia Tech type option offense when he had Connor & Norwood, MSU would have probably made a bowl.

My point is I hope the new coach dumb's down his offense to fit his personel. At least until he can get his own recruits in his system.

As of right now, as far as an effective MSU offense next year, all I can see is a lot of "wild dog formation" trick plays & the MSU WR's running 1960's down & out patterns. That and Dixon up the middle 30 times a game.

Russell needs to make some phone calls to P.Patterson and Bumphis to get them on board

If State is lucky enough to land Patterson, Bumphis & Russell, you'll have your spread offense nucleus on campus.

That means MSU can begin to run an effective, SEC quality spread offense the 2011 season.

Meanwhile, you've got to figure something out for 2009 & 2010.

So think CB and PP would be redshirted? I think those two could help immediately if we landed them.

Are you assuming that Brandon Mcrae's broken leg was career ending? I haven't been checking on that too much so I could have missed that news. If not, I think he could fit into spread pretty well.

Let me say first that I am not a former coach. I did play football, but I do not claim to be an expert. And I rarely render opinions on what plays, formations, or strategies we are running. In general, I don't care what offense the coaches run as long as it leads to wins.

That being said, I did go to all the home games as well as the LA Tech and Ole Miss disasters, and i believe the following to be true:

1. Tyson Lee was in the shotgun damn near every play --I only specifically remember one play that he was not. I'm sure there were others, but not many.
2. Many of the plays were an 'option' type play where the RB would cross in front of Lee and he would either hand him the ball or keep it going the other way. It's the same EXACT play that I've seen Memphis, KY, West Virginia, and others run against us successfully for years. I always considered it the running play staple of a spread offense.
3. We piled up a lot of yards and points that day, even though as i said, it was "only" Arkansas.
4. I heard JB Grimes use the word "spread" during his post-game interview.
5. I heard Crxxm describe that for this one game he had decided to get out of the way and let "them" call plays... Not sure who this "them" was, but whoever it was had a lot more success than he did that day.

So it may not have technically been a 'spread' offense, but I don't know what else to call it. All I'm saying is, it was a shitpot better and more fun than watching the dixon-dixon-incomplete-mcadams playcalling I saw so often this year. Hell, the last 5 years.

Am I way off base here? I know that with all the experts on this board, if I am I will be corrected momentarily...

I don't know anything about Brandon's injury and his prognosis. Howeevvuuhhhh, someone very close to me suffered a double compound fracture at mid tibia location. (All 4 ends of the bones sticking out through the skin by and inch or two.) I have witnessed ortho procedures for knees, ankles, hips, ribs, shoulders and arms..I never felt the urge to hurl until I saw that. Maybe it was TOO close to me.

First off, the fear of resistant infection these days is paramount. Embolism...blood clot...healing issues are really worrisome. The PRIMARY fear is just KEEPING your leg!!

After a two and a half year period, the orthopaedic pronounced the leg healed enough to "clear for college athletics."

Let's not count on Brandon to show up full-speed for next fall. I hope and pray so....but let's just wait and see. It's serious stuff.

We seemed to really change up our whole offensive philosphy game by game (which I think ended up hurting us in the end). To answer your question, I did see some spread type sets mixed in there throughout the season; but it depended on which game you were watching.

In case you hadn't noticed, we've spent most of the season out of the shotgun. 3 weeks earlier, on the same field against UK, we ran the same exact offense. The difference was Arkansas couldn't cover anyone and couldn't tackle anyone. It looked better and thus people started saying we were running something different, but we weren't. I dont' care what it seemed like, we ran the exact same offense we did against UK. The reason it worked was Arkansas' defense played like complete crap. Had we played Ole Miss that day we get blown out. Seriously, every time we ran an out pattern against Arkansas, and it was often, our WRs were open. I credit lee for being accurate and smart with the ball, but he didn't have much pressure and had open WRs all game.

I give -- I won't waste any more of my precious asian midget porn viewing time arguing about Croom's failed offense.

Later.

or force the one he hires to run that offense? Seems like any statement about your offense next year is a little premature unless Byrne knows somthing we don't.
