Thoughts on Mullen's Junior College Recruiting..............

Ok, I agree that State has some serious depth issues but what do you guys think about our JUCO signees?

I obviously acknowledge the fact that they are Dec grads so they can help immediately but I don't know what to think about a couple of these prospects.

The Punter Hutchins & Kicker Brauchle - these are needs so I have no problems with these guys.

Chris White - LB - this guy is a long time commit and seems excited about State. He did not have impressive offers (USA and USF), but I think he is a keeper.

Maurice Langston - CB - this guy's offer list is decent (KY, Memphis, UAB, Troy, North TX) compared to White's. I'm not sure that this guy should be a four star (does Scout rate all these guys high because their stars only count as half for points?), but he can provide some depth to the secondary which is losing a lot this year.

Leon Berry - WR - This guy was taken from USM at the last minute. He had no other SEC offers but did have a lot of CUSA such as Memphis, UAB, Marshall and USM. This guy fills a need because MSU lost McRae to injuary and Co-Eric to graduation. I would rather develop some FR WR's but this guy could be a leader and help Tyson Lee next year.

I know that a lot of the top tier programs don't really go after JUCO's. Does anyone have any info on where these guys signed out of HS? Do y'all think these guys are worth the 5 scholarships that MSU can't use on high school kids this year?

Also, what is up with McPhee? He was the JUCO STUD in this class...........

and if you select impact players it's a good thing. Jackie rolled the dice to many times and got burnt big time with that group from Kansas i believe it was.

I don't want to have to count on the clowns we had out there last year or Freshmen.

True freshmen can come in and play WR at an acceptable level- see Julio Jones. O-linemen have to be developed.

Ok, so let's see how we compare to our "Rivals"

Ole Miss - One Dec Juco. His name is Logar Clair, OT, unranked on Scout. He is a project but has good size. He is the type of guy that we could have used to help our OL depth but he isn't a star by any means. They tried to recruit JUCO OL but lost out on some big names like Carpenter and Watts and had a guy with grade issues (Schulte)

They have 2 other May Jucos. Demond Washington - 5 Star on Scout / 4 Star on Rivals. He is a RB/DB and I'm not sure where the Rebels are projecting him. He is a 5 star talent based on special teams alone. Watch his Scout film if you disagree. He would have been our Punt Returner and Kick Returner on Day 1.

Their other Juco is Safey J. Hornsby 4 Star on Rivals, 3 Star on Scout. We all know about this kid. Seems like quite an athlete and a 5 star in high school. He also had offers from UA our Juco. He would play for us.

Alabama - only signed one Juco. His name is James Carpenter and he is a stud OL. He would start for us on Day 1. He is a massive man with an impressive offer list.

Auburn - only one Juco. His name is Eltoro Freeman and he is a 5 Star LB.. Total stud. Would have started for us on Day 1.

Here is my point. How many of our signees will contribute / start for us? We need help now and do you think we are getting it from this group?

Jackie did really well with his JUCO recruiting until he tried to sign an entire class full of them. Nobody in their right mind would have attempted that.

He wouldn't have had to try that if he had recruited better in the previous couple of years. JWS signed some pretty underwhelming classes during the peak of our success on the field. By '02, we were in terrible shape with the players we had on campus.

He did sign some highly-ranked classes in '02 and '03 but then made some terrible decisions on hiring assistant coaches. I still think that had he not hired Ron Cooper to be our DC, he would've been around a few years longer. The year that this idiot was in charge of our defense, we were down by at least 3 or 4 TDs in our first few games only to come back and lose by a TD or less (minus the LSU game). By the time he announced his retirement (before the Auburn game, I think), the team quit on him altogether.

team won't get much better. Mullen needs to get as many HS kids as he can right now. A 3 star HS OL or 2 Star for that matter can develop a lot better in 5 years (counting the RS) than these guys can in the next two. If MSU is using all these spots on Jucos, they are in a way mortgaging the future.

Signing some bigtime jucos can help with that. Can't just sign players to field a roster..need some guys that can contribute.

about how little Croom did to earn his 17ing millions. We`re in deep dodo talent wise and Mullen REALLY will need a couple of years (pulling out all the stops) to put a team on the field. Without JUCOs it`ll be 3 years.

I honestly think the coaches were trying to keep that one a secret, but you said it, not me.

Jason Pierre-Paul - DE - 5 Star on Scout, 4 Star on Rivals - talk about a need and an impact player. If we got him, he could be our Greg Hardy or at least our Kentrell Lockett. I have never been so envious of the Rebels when I saw their DL in the Egg Bowl. McPhee and Pierre-Paul could get us closer to that.

Did you hear the MSU is after Rudell Crim as well? I know that Ole Miss has allegedly backed off wonder. Wonder if its because he is a MSU commit?

I know the offense was ****** during Crooms whole tenure but last year the O-line is what gave the offense some "success". This year it all evaporated away this and losing Brown didn't help. The immediate help is in both lines. If you can win the trenches you can win with a little less talent in the skill positions.

From the Egg Bowl depth chart on the official site, MSU lost 7 defensive starters and that doesn't include Jesse Bowman who was hurt so really 8 starters. WOW. I don't know too much about all the guys waiting in the wings, but I am not very optimistic. On the offensive side, MSU lost 2 OL that play a decent amount, a FB, Co-Eric and McRae (assuming he can't play again). I think the offense should better because of Mullen but there still isn't a lot of talent there but the defense is quite depleted. I guess these "stopgaps" will have to start. Croom sure did leave this program in quite a bind. </p>

Come on folks. You know Mullen is doing everything he can having only been here a few weeks. He is doing everyhing he can to get more players and keep the commitments.

for a quick fix. And we certainly need some fixin'.

Mullen's ultimate evaluation/grade as a head coach is whether he can keep it fixed.

I agree that Washington will most likely end up at DB, but he will get a shot at running the ball. If he's a better than the backs we have now, and the one's coming in, what a surprise that will be.

Birminghamfan, in some of your posts you come across as a fan of OM. Not saying you are, but if that's the case, don't waste your time trying to be an imposter.....it'll work out better for you in the long run. If I'm way wrong on this....I apologize.</p>

One thing to consider - we've got a new coaching staff, so everyone will be learning new systems and getting used to coaching styles. So the JUCO players will not be the only ones adjusting this spring. That may give them a better chance to grab a starting spot. And looking at our group of receivers, I don't think Mullen had any other option. We needed some guys with experience playing at a level higher than high school, and we really don't have that without McRae.

I've always felt you could do okay recruiting JUCO at certain positions, but I don't like recruiting JUCO QB, OL, or RB. It just seems those positions take a year or two for the player to develop, so you don't get much return on those positions. They seem to do better on the defensive side. But I guess the bright side is, if they suck, you only have to waste the scholarship on them for 2 years.

I am actually a gradute of Birmingham Southern and still live in Bham. I HATE AL and AU. I have more connections to MSU than Ole Miss but I do follow both teams.

there was simply no way around that.

Which means we've only given 3 juco schollies to position players. Which isn't that big a deal. Two are WRs and again, have you seen who we have returning at WR after five years of Croom and Co. recruiting that position? If there is one more it'll be McPhee and he's an immediate impact player so why would you not give him one?

So, no story here where I'm concerned.

JWS did quite well with JUCO's , until the latter years, and others especially Auburn, and others also bought into the JUCO plan which took our JUCO's...
We have gaps...that need to be filled... to say otherwise.. just don't say it...we need help

Please Coach Mullen, go get some help...

Why should he live by Croom's rules?...think outside of the box...go get help... be innovative.

What I'm saying is our o-line is a lethal combination of lack of talent AND size. If we can get someone to come in and play right away with some size and slightly more talent (a stopgap) that will allow us to develop guys like Jackson and Watts. We're not going to get some all-world o-linemen from JUCO unless they're illiterate. (Would insert a Jerrell Powe joke here, but I'm tired of all of these Ole Miss people getting their panties in a wad.)

Yeah, our blocking schemes will be more simple than Croom's offense, and the wider splits will help some, as will being in the shotgun all the time, but the guys we've got not just can't get the job done. They flat out suck. And on top of that, we're smaller than some D-I-AA schools.

.....Croom stinks and doesn't recruit enough jucos to now thinking Mullen is recrutiing too many. I may be one of the more negative people out there, but for the love of all that's Holy can we just for once have a little faith and trust Dan Mullen to do what's best? It's not like we're going to get worse.

since most of us thought that about your turnaround. End of the day, we were two missed field goals from 6-6, a bowl bid, and Croom still our coach.

We've been told repeatedly how Croom had turned around recruiting for the last couple years.

Either that was a lie or it shouldn't take Mullen much time at all.
