2a Maiden ‘71, ‘78, ‘92, ‘22, ‘23

1a Maiden ‘98, ‘00, ‘01, ‘02

There are so many others that were very good as well…that ‘79 team was loaded…lost to Swain 7-6 who went on to win the championship. ‘77 was another great team that lost to Catholic.

Tip of the cap to those great teams that beat Maiden.

Swain, Thomasville, Albemarle, Lexington, Starmount, Catholic, Graham, Brevard, Shelby, East Surry, Reidsville…and the list goes on and on.

There were locals too…like Lincolnton, Newton Conover, Bandys, East Lincoln…they all have had great teams over the years that knocked us out of the playoffs.

As a life long Maiden fan…I couldn’t pick a single team…but I sure have enjoyed watching pert near every one of them.

I glad to see some posting going on this thread. I beginning to think it was going to be a dud. Lol.
If anyone wants to add other teams go ahead. I’m was just bore and was throwing a topic out. Lol.

'04 Maiden team was 14-1 and the last Maiden team to have made it to the western finals. Lost to Thomasville at home.

I would like to had seen Thomas team of ‘95 played against a good Reidsville or Shelby team and just to see what would happen.
You don’t even have go Reidsville or Shelby. How about ‘99 High Point Central or ‘97 Clinton? I saw HPC in ‘97, and knew they were going to be a problem the following two years. They were pretty much all sophomores in ‘97, and were very competitive vs a state finalist Shelby team. Shelby used a trick play to beat them in ‘98. They were junior dominant. ‘99, as seniors, they dominated, and won the state. I saw Clinton up close and personal in ‘97, great team.

99 HP Central would be the only contender against Thomasville in 1995. Chuckie Reed, Ricky Haywood, and Rashad Stevenson were lethal in that option attack.

On another note, though, some of these really old teams would get aired out today, in my opinion. These kids today are bigger and faster. We often engage in “old head” talk on here, but schematically and size-wise, some of these old teams would get whipped.

If we were to look at the trenches on some of those teams, I bet two or three of the linemen were under 200lbs. Linebackers were 175 and so on.

T-Ville held Reidsville and their air raid stacked with all state WRs to 41 points total between 1993 and 1996. So, they probably could hold their own.

And if you look at the video I mentioned you'd see a massive OL and DL for the Bulldogs.

Good write up in Salisbury Post from way back about Thomasville playing Salisbury in 3rd rd of the playoffs in ‘95. I remembered that year somewhat about that game and even how good Salisbury was. Salisbury had 7 shutouts that season and mauled some teams throughout the year. They gave up like average 5 points a game. But when they met up with Thomasville in the playoffs it was different story. Big defensive battle. Thomasville won 14-6 and then shutout Clinton in the 2A State Championship game 16-0. As it was stated in the paper. The players of Thomasville would tell anyone that Salisbury was the toughest team they played all year.

Those air raid attacks from those days are not the same. The way teh game has evolved today. The defenses of today are just now catching up, but still playing catch up.

Some times I do feel comparing teams that are decades apart is an apples an orange competition, or trying to race a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am against a 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.

The same passing concepts you see today were being ran by Teague and Gutshall back in the late 80s and 90s

I've seen old film of those. They are impressive(especially for that time). They are not ran to the same precision, timing, and disguises we see today. You're speaking of run and shoot style offesnes like ATlanta Falcons of the 90s.

Alot of Gutshall and Teague's teams were still under center even though they threw alot. And Teague's offense still had alot of rushing plays compared to today, especially in the early 2000s.

The I'm sure Gutshall's Cummings team does not look like his Dorman(Spartanburg) team besides both of them being called the Caveliers.

Very similar styles between the RnS and Air Raid for sure.

That Starmount Ram team in 1996 beat those Blue Devils twice in one year. :)

1998 game was a good one too!!

SWO played HP in title game. Never seen a team since run with so much reckless abandonment. Chuckie and Ricky ran wild. Tipped my hat to them. Knew their coach and Chuckie pops on a friendship level and shook their hands after the game. Couldn't say anything lol

That trans Am couldn't even hold up to a 74 Buick Limited. We had one. It was the step up over the Electra 225. Had a 455 with 4 barrel and dual exhaust and no smog control. Just flip the breather lid upside down to provide more air. She was big and mean!

Starmount and Maiden have met 8 times in our history. Starmount leads the series 6-2:

1987; S 26 - M 22
1990; S 27 - M 22
1992; M 36 - S 6
1996; S 22 - M 13
1996; S 17 - M 7
1998; S 17 - M 14
2004; M 20 - S 14
2008; S 49 - M 28 *vs Brian Brown

4 of the 8 games have been decided by less than 1 score....and 6 of the 8 by 10 points or less.

Starmount was 1 of the 15 teams that had a winning record against Tom Brown (out of 68 opponents):

2-5 vs Starmount
2-3 vs Charlotte Catholic
1-2 vs Hickory
0-4 vs Shelby
0-2 vs Albemarle
0-1 vs West Brunswick, Holbrook, Central Cabarrus, Cummings, Brevard, East Burke, Parkwood, Graham, Elkin, Ragsdale

Good stuff! Grizz.

Lowell Holbrook…there’s an old one….I guess that’s South Point now…but I’m not sure….maybe Hunter Huss.

I’ve always thought Elkin was a team that we’ve never played before. What year was that?

We've played Elkin twice:

1965 - Bill Barefoot's last year. Maiden beat Elkin in a 1st round playoff game 13-0. Then lost in the 2nd round to Webster.

1966 - Tom Brown's first year. Maiden lost to Elkin in the 1st round of the playoffs 27-7 (after going 9-0 in the regular season and averaging 57 points a game)

Tom Brown and Allen Brown had a great friendship. Thomasville was 3-4 against Maiden with some great games between two excellent programs.
Not too many teams have a winning record against Allen and Benjie Brown. It’s fitting that Tom and Allen are virtually tied for most wins at one school. Allen edged him by one game.

I can’t exactly remember. But I believe Clinton had a really good team one year and beat Bandys in the 2A State Championship around ‘03 or so. Someone can help me out here. I believe the score was like 60 something to 20 something. I know it wasn’t pretty for Bandys.

I wanna say Bandys lost to Reidsville 2 years in a row for the state championship in 03 and 04

Now I gotta check...

Ok it was in ‘96 when Clinton beat Bandys 26-14 2A State Championship game. I was living over in Catawba Co close to where Bandys high is at. I remember listening to that game on the radio.
