To approach or not approach

Last night I was enjoying an elegant evening of dining at the China Garden, when I see none other than Coach Wilson.It must have been an off night as there were only about10 people in the restaurant, and from what I could gather, I was the only one (save a couple giggling college kids) that recognized him. He was with his son and they were at a booth on the opposite side of the restaurant. I waivered back and forth with the idea of approaching him to ask him for a picture with me and my daughter (a 4 year old State fan), but the thought of he's here with his son and probably doesn't want to be disturbed kept holding me back. I finally decided to hold off on it, and just give him a nod of the head to let him know I recognized him and appreciate being left alone when dining with family.

What's the best way to handle this situation? Is the decision to approach a coach different than approaching players?

they are trying to enjoy an evening with his family. Get an autograph when the situation calls for it - like at a practice or alumni event. At leas that is what I would do.

saw Cohen at city bagel getting a bite to eat (to go), and all I said was "hey Coach, hows everything going?" didn't care to bother him too much past that.

saw Mullen in CVS, and said about the same.. I just know if I was in their situation and I was out in public going about my business, being a usual guy, I would get tired of people coming up to me all the time. I know you're supposed to be a public figure, but I agree, there are times and places to ask for autographs and photos.

I saw Scott Stricklin at CJ's Pizza in Starkville sitting by himself on the iPad eating. I had the opportunity to say hey to him, but figured there was a good reason he was by himself so I didn't bother.

I'd never heard of the guy. Some teenage white kid was walking in front of us and acts like he's trying to hi-five this big black fellow walking at us, then the kid said, "what up big black?"

Needless to say the guy didn't speak and brushed the kid off. My wife and I both thought, WTF is that kid thinking?

Then we saw the local new about them doing some appearance at the mall.

As long as you don't approach him while he's shoveling food in his mouth, I doubt he would care. He's the DC at MSU for God sake. I doubt he gets tired of signing things. I think catching him at the register is acceptable. He probably even likes the attention.

I was at the Butcher Shop in downtown Memphis for a Christmas party in the late 90's. After a few beers I go to the urinal to return my beer back to nature. When finished I do a quick 180 and I'm standing face to face with The Rock. At this time he wasn't famous, and I didn't recognize him right away. He's giving me the people's eye, I'm still in the process of zipping my fly, and all I'm thinking is why is this big dude staring at me like he is while my pants are half zipped. I hurriedly wash my hands and leave while looking overmy shoulder to make sure he wasn't about to drag me in astall.It was only after I walkedby a table with Farooq and D-Lo Brown did I realize who it was.

Knowing what I know now, I still wouldn't of struck up a conversation with him just because of the environment.

Since we are all sharing random famous people stories, I once was in a huge metal shell Ohr Museum Pods) of a building under construction with Frank Gehry during a bad *** thunderstorm. The old man just complained about his back the entire time.

By the way, Frank Gehry was a character on the Simpsons. As architects go, that is about as famous as it gets.

On the celebrity sightings, Went skiing in Park City, Utah about 6 years ago, got off the lift and a tall person is standing not far from where we got off. As I skied over to see his face, its non other than Mr. Flop, Vlade Divac, swear to god. As I skied kinda past him, I said "Vlade Dade he like to Parde" pretty loud and he said in a deep middle eastern voice "What up" and that was the end of that. Who would have thought, Vlade Divac on top of the mountain.

Just be polite, he's only a Defensive coordinator for little ole Mississippi State. From my experiences being around famous athletes and celebrities, just be yourself and do not act all star stuck. A lot of them are really down to earth real people who just happen to be famous. And some of them really like to party....
