Perfect picture. All these Texas schools have boosters with oil money despite the recent issues in the oil patch.

ECU probably knows their coach is looking to move up to higher level and, after a sucky season, did a pre-emptive firing like FIU did to Mario Cristobal.

Which puts the equivalent number for a coach working in New Jersey over $3 million. And that's before the difference in real estate and property taxes are considered.

So how many arguments did I have with people when I said there will be coaches like Hermann that would rather stay where they are than take a job like Rutgers?

And we respect Hermann for being loyal to his program.... But for every Herman there is another coach who would want to be loyal, but can be swayed by a huge raise.... Big time programs woo with big money all the time.

It's hard to sell yourself as a head coach if you only stay at a school for one year. If he leaves Houston after one year, then when he is recruiting the next year for a different school how can he look a recruit in the face and promise he'll be there in 5 years?

Also in other news Tom Herman was never on the table.

Honestly, who cares about what the NJ people and media will say.......they will ***** no matter what, so we should just do what we need to do and move on.

$2.8 million and a potential big pay day from Texas or someone else next year.

Basically what I assume happens is - he put out feelers, didnt get much more than Houston was going to pay him (after all - hes still only had one year as HC -it could be a fluke) and decided that rather than take say $16 million from a Rutgers, he take $2.8 million from Houston and potentially get $20 million from Texas next year.

I dont think Herman is being loyal - just taking somewhat of a gamble on himself. Like Rhule I think will end up doing. Its dont think that its that RU couldnt afford him straight up - Im sure if we really wanted to we could have thrown $4 million a year at him, its more than RU (and the rest of CFB) thinks he is worth less than Herman himself does.

Basically - the fact that no one ended up with him tells you that its not just an RU thing - there were other attractive jobs - its a money thing - he wants more than people were going to offer based on one good season.

I think they may go for Rod Carey. Their AD is from NIU as I've posted here before. Also read Riley is close to McNeil so he wouldn't take the job but who knows it's not like head jobs come around every day. On the other hand he might believe in himself enough to think he'll get an opportunity elsewhere sooner or later.

Houston did a nice job. They didn't overpay him. They paid him what I've said top mid major coaches usually get in their first P5 job, 3-3.5M. So that's about market rate. I think they agreed to some facility upgrades too. Buyout is 2.5M next year but can be reduced if facility improvement doesn't happen.
