Sad, sad day. Always loved Tom Petty's music. Loved him as a member of The Traveling Wilburys as well, the concept of superband as garage band was genius, great musicians who loved to make great music left their egos outside the studio and just had fun. Won't soon be forgotten.

I listened to a ton of TP up through Hard Promises ('81). For whatever reason, he sort of got lost on my radar even though I knew he continued to produce a lot of hits. I got back into listening to him just a year or so ago. Sad that he's gone (or maybe not, depending on which report you believe). Absolutely loved the early, Byrds-esque sound with the Rickenbacker guitars.

My favorite has to be American Girl due to it's place in Fast TImes at Ridgemont High, one of the movies of my middle/high school years. Z28's, Sean Penn before he became a douche, hanging out at the mall with not a care in the world.

Lord, time is really flying by.

Short, sweet, to the point -- this one oozes "cool" from every pore...

My junior year fraternity formal (3 night weekend in a Gatlinburg chalet with dates) we randomly heard this song on the radio 14 times over the weekend. In the hot tub, in the car, out at dinner, even over the speaker at the putt putt course we played. After that it was one of my groups official party songs. One of his greatest and my personal favorite. RIP Tom.

I saw him several times. Great shows. I remember he pulled that Alice in wonderland top hat out of a big treasure chest filled with bright lights. The crowd wants nuts

Don't say that, I visit Sonny's at least three times a week. I can't imagine a world without a rack of ribs. Tom Petty was from Gainesville, Fl where Sonny's started. It is a sad day for all. Rest in Peace Tom Petty and thank you for the tremendous music and memories that will not die
Barbeque is possibly the unhealthiest food in the world. The way the meat is smoked to perfection, together with the charring, produces a carcinogen cornucopia on the outer layer. That's not even getting into the artery clogging properties of fatty cuts, the sugar overload from many barbeque sauces, and the bonus carcinogens from nitrogenous preservatives.

Regular consumption will significantly increase your likelihood of suffering from like half the top 10 fatal diseases in the US.

But yeah, it is horribly tasty.

I wasn't trying to be flip. He died of a heart attack. Don't get me wrong, I love good Barbeque, but every week? Not very healthy.

So true. It's hard to imagine a world in which Sean Penn wasn't a repulsive degenerate. Was that really just one lifetime ago?

Just the other day I posted to a fellow RR member’s sig, which was a Chris Farley gif. Do you realize in December it will have been 20 years since he passed? So many kids these days never knew a world with him in it. I am reminded daily of how old I have gotten in the blink of an eye.

Some things in life are worth it. BBQ is one of them. Franklin Roosevelt was president when I was born so I am getting up in age. Health foods and diets are not of concern to me because what the government says is good for you changes like the seasons. So I eat any and all things in moderation and I can still carry in a bucket of coal. I have my grandpa's BBQ recipe, he lived to be 86 and was breaking horses two days before he die. Mama died at 95 in her sleep and raised us how she was raised on grits, fried mullet, collards and swamp cabbage (Sabel palm hearts). At my house we eat what some would call Southern cooking but we just call it supper.

Now some things I do stay away from Any cola based soft drink and any and all diet drinks. I also refuse to eat any artificial sugar replacement. I prefer sugar cane sugars. I drink ice tea and well water and of course a pot of black coffee for breakfast. I have found the unhealthiest people on earth are vegetarians and their life expectancy is suspect. But I guess they do have clear arteries but very little nourishment. They get a little puny.

I hope to be here when the morning comes but if I ain't. Go Cats and RIP Tom Petty. You were a good one and we will miss you. The next time I have a slab of baby backs at Sonny's I will salute you.

No antics on this one for me.

Love Petty's music. I celebrate his entire catalog from Mudcrutch to the Heartbreakers to Wilburys to his solo stuff. The last two albums that he and the Heartbreakers released in the 2000's were some of the best albums "cover to cover" that they have ever released. Mojo and Hyptonic Eye. Good stuff.

Too many great songs for me to list a favorite. But my favorite story about one of his songs is the story of Petty and Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics) co-producing/co-writing "Don't Come Around Here No More" together. Absolutely hilarious.

I'm certainly not sticking up for the government - I'm a medical researcher, and the science of what is good for you has changed relatively little over the past couple decades.

Of course, rigorous science is different from what the clumsy, poorly run government will offer, or what the food conglomerates will market (low fat! Whole wheat! Just kidding.. Gluten free!)

But I absolutely respect not caring at a certain age, and you are right that there are many little hipsters who are too clever for their own good, ending up malnourished of veganism. You're also right that moderation is the best prescription of all.

I know you’re walkin’ down a lonely street. I know you can’t get out of the heat. Baby, it’s alright. Don’t have a wasted life.
