I could be imagining this... but didn't Osborne have to get on the microphone years ago to tell the crowd to chill? Or was that because of frozen oranges being chunked?

Yeah, TO got on the ref's mic and said he asked the ref to penalize NU if the orange throwing didn't stop.

That's funny because I seem to recall the same thing but wondered if I was going senile. Seems like it was at a K-State game and every time their QB would come under center it would get louder.

That sounds familiar (the noise part) to me.

Evidently the crowd noise rule lasted from 1984 (Link) to 2006 (Link). I can remember it coming up a few times in my early years of following college football.

I swear I remember that too. Could be imagining it I guess.

Memory is fading here, but I think it was during the 1992 or 1994 Colorado game. Their QB kept complaining to the refs that the team couldn't hear anything in the huddle. At one point the refs warned the crowd, but it only made it much, much worse. At that point I think even the people in the concessions stands were screaming. It was hilarious.

Yep. It made absolutely no sense to me at the time that a QB could simply look to the ref and say "I can't hear" and the ref would call a timeout asking the crowd to quiet down. Thank God that asinine rule has been eliminated.
