For me, it's Florida 2000. On that day, we were the best team in the nation. No doubt in my mind.

Florida 1992
Arkansas 1998

LSU 82 First night game at Scott field. LSU was top 10. Huge underdogs. Won on last second FG.

Arky 98 Secured first and only western division championship in dramatic fashion

Umissy 99 CJ sirmones wide open. Eugene Clinton kick then pick. Westerfield FG.

I'm sure there were some in the older days that I have no memory of. I thought about 1941 but we won the conference that year on the road (played an unbelievable 4 of 5 SEC games and 7 of 10 total games on the road!)

One of my earliest and fondest memories of MSU football. I was 8, and can still hear Jack, and see my dad pacing the living room telling me and my brother to "shut the hell up so I can hear. This is important, Damnit!"

Florida 2000 would have to be #1.

That 2000 team was good enough to win the SEC. They just couldn't close games on the road when they were leading and lost that stupid Sleet Storm game against Arkansas.

The 2000 UF game was awesome. My favorite home game under Mullen was the 2009 Egg Bowl. Relf and Dixon destroyed them that day.

Top ten in chronological order...

1950 Tennessee - defeated the team that would become national champions
1982 LSU - First night game at Scott Field
1991 Texas
1996 Alabama
1998 Arkansas
1999 Mississippi
2000 Florida
2007 Alabama
2007 Mississippi
2013 Mississippi

Missing the cut:
1981 Miami - A big game and win at the time, but in retrospect not all that big...
1984 LSU - Yeah, we beat LSU but we also beat them in '82 and '82 was the first night game...
1991 Mississippi - First Battle for the Golden Egg back in Starkville after being in Jackson (also notable for the first game without pregame prayer and the obligatory Go to Hell Ole Miss cheer after the Amen)
1998 Alabama - Needed the win to stay alive for the SEC West hunt but not a top ten win...
2004 Florida - Yeah, we beat Florida, but it was Zook.
2009 Mississippi - The game that whetted our appetite for the 2010 season...

A historically balanced list this will not be......

Because fans are going to naturally favor games they actually remember with a bias for the more recent. There aren't any fans left that remember the 30s and older and a low percentage that remember the 40s and 50s. As a result, nearly every game mentioned thus far is 80s and forward.

Wonder what the top 3 from each decade would be?

My list, no certain order

99 eggbowl
98 Arky
00 UF
99 LSU
2012 Tennessee - Most fun I have ever had at a state game
98 Bama - JJ going for over 200 on them in the rain, my dad going nuts and instilling the hatred for alabama that I have now
82 LSU
09 egg bowl
07 Bama
99 Kentucky

One underrated game was the 1982 Georgia game. Never knew this until I saw it on Youtube, but it was the first game ever televised at Scott Field.

It had some compelling stories- Herschel Walker (the hype over Herschel coming to campus was the same as for Tim Tebow in 2009), John Bond and John Lastinger (both alums of Valdosta High and good buds), some of my classmates playing in the game (Ermon Green, Clay Peacher), State hanging tough with Georgia until Bond fumbled the ball at the end of the game, Georgia going on to lose the National Championship game to Pedd State.

Here's a video of the game:

The South Carolina game on Thursday night with national coverage after the 9/11

bombing has to be one of the great ones. honestly do not remember the score but remember the emotion and pride I felt defying someone my freedom to assemble without fear.

October 14, 1978. MSU beats Florida State 55-27. Huge offensive numbers for the day. Dave Marler, our punter, was the QB. Marty McDole had 178 yards receiving. We were up and down the field all day long. I think FSU was ranked #15 at the time. That game was a lot of fun.

I think the 1981 game vs Miami was televised. I was a student at the time but I'm pretty sure I remember my father watched it in Jacksonville. Maybe it was just televised in FL.

That Florida and Auburn back-to-back in 2000 may never be topped. That Auburn game was one of the all-time great defensive performances ever at MSU. The score doesn't fully indicate the level of buttwhooping that occurred that day. Auburn didn't get a 1st down until the 2nd half, and Rudi Johnson, who in the other ten regular season games never had less than 110 yards rushing and ended with 1652 rushing yards on the season, was held to only 26 yards.

I was at that game! I think it was homecoming, and my recollection is that FSU was ranked 11th by either AP or UPI.

Speaking of the 1982 games with lsu and Georgia, I was at both. Mutt, the John Bond fumble late against Georgia about sums up John Bond's career. He had a nasty habit of blowing games in the fourth quarter. Had chances to win a number of games during his career. Loved his nice shiny black corvette around campus.

The lsu game in 1982 was cold as hell, Al Michaels did the game for ABC. It was the first game under the lights, but calling it a night game is stretching it. The game started at 2:30 Mississippi time, but it was played in November after the time change, so it got dark early, and they had to bring in portable lights.

The 1992 Florida game was to date the most excited I have ever been at a game. I think it was a Halloween night too? I always think of it as the Halloween game for some reason. The Egg Bowl that sent us to Atlanta was 2nd.

I played in a golf tournament in the spring of 2001 with Noel Mazzone, Auburn's offensive coordinator in the 2000 season. When Mazzone found out I was a State fan he first thanked me for not asking him about the 2000 game and then he told me that State's defense in that 2000 game was the best he had ever seen. He said he had never coached a team that was held to zero first downs in the first half, and he commented that he never would have believed a defense could shut down Rudi Johnson like ours did----26 yards on 18 carries.

Edited to say that the 2000 Auburn team we beat was very good. They played in the SEC Championship game that year.

And it is amazing that we lost to Arkansas that same year-who was no way in comparison as good as Florida or Auburn.

I was there Oct 24th1970--51-15

The Dogs knocked the 17 out Wee Willie Heidleburg and the Mustard Buzzards. Just one week earlier USM and beaten Archie and the undefeated rebs 30-14. What a fun game. I think John David Calhoun knocked wee Willie out.

I wasn't in Starkville for the great 1974 season (off at school), but isn't there a game from that season that could be mentioned. I know we beat Memphis (State) on a last minute two point conversion, but I think that game was in Memphis. Not sure.

Glad to see that Miami game on the list. Wow on that one. Best time I ever had at Homecoming. I would finally say that yours is the best list in the thread, from my point of view.

2007 Bama game has to be on there. At the time, that was a huge win. And it was as loud as I've ever heard DWS when AJ got that pick.

This game should in no way be on the list but the Arkansas 2010 game was the best atmosphere I've ever seen at DWS. It's a real shame we lost that game.

I was there. Still hurts to this day for two reasons, we could've beaten Herschel and what could've been had Tyler still been our coach.

Eta: sorry. In response to mutts UGA game.
