Taking son to Ridgeland in morning. I’m not a golfer and have never been. Seems pretty easy. Anything else I need to know before going?

You’re paying for time not strokes. The faster you hit the more you get to play. I’d buy one of those short drivers if they sold them in the gift shop. I’ve never hit any club as straight as I can hit that thing.

It’s fun but the weather needs to be right. One of the better things about Top Golf is the food surprisingly. Use the clubs there. If you have your own set leave them at home. The one in Memphis puts out metal detectors at night which is slightly disconcerting. Play the easiest games on there. Alternate turns in groups of 5 or 10 shots between players. A little more engaging for everyone that way and if you or others are out of shape the frequent breaks help. Just be diligent about making sure you switch to the appropriate player on the score screen for each turn. It’s touch screen so it’s foolproof. Don’t forget a glove

It’s basically a fancy driving range with some targets if you want to keep score. But you can also just hit balls for fun with no scoring if you want.

Went for the first time a few months ago and loved it. I don’t golf, but thought it was really fun. We’ve been a couple of times since.

If you are taking small children, “Block Party” is a good game because they get points no matter where the ball lands on the field. The last time I went, it had a Fantastic Four theme.

Ahh Top Golf facilities. The abandoned drive in theaters of the future. Admittedly there will be far, far fewer of them.

I kid, I'm sure it's a lot of fun. And very expensive.

My dad always referred to golf as "cow pasture pool"
In the late 90’s there was a fellow between Durant and Lexington that actually created a driving range in his pasture that still had cows. After a bit he sold or moved his cows and started working on greens and tee boxes. The “course “ still had the fence around it. Think it opened for play in about 2000.

That’s the Kendall’s. They call it Halifax Holes.

When we lived on the farm, my dad built a Par 3 hole that was about 150 yards. Not surprising that he was absolute money from within 150 yards after that.

I like golf but only get to play once or twice a year. I would have to get paid to go to top golf.

We just got a place like a Top Golf, but called Chasing Aces. Got the top golf driving range, but they also built a 9 hole par 3 course. Really cool venue

No kidding. The Sure Drive driver at Top Golf makes me look competent.
I've considered putting a short shaft in a regular driver head but I'm sure there's more difference than just the shaft length.

If you play from one of the upper levels, don't fall off. If you do, there's a net to catch you but it would be awkward to get you out. The balls are sort of dead, so if you're a golfer, they won't go as far as you're used to.

The food's good, at least at the one where I live (Huntsville).

Interesting. Kind of aligns with my personal experience. Went once in Alpharetta. It was ok. But not something I’m going to do more than once a year, if that. Actually now that I think about it, it’s been about 3 years since I’ve gone there.

The much maligned one here that is or was their only single story version is always packed....inexplicably. of course, the cook at the table hibachi places are also always full too, guess we have sucker clientele for the "once a year" places.

When I lived in Alpharetta, that was about 5 minutes from my house and I only went about 3 times in several years. Two of those was with my job.

The TopGolf in my metro opened almost right at 1 year ago.
There are currently 2 competitor locations opening in the next 12-18mo, with land already being prepped for construction.

3 of these totally unsustainable for the size and income of the metro.
I don't understand the decision making. One of the competitors will be 1.5mi away from TopGolf...so they can't even draw on people from other parts of the metro.

I can't imagine ever going to TopGolf again, unless it's because of a work event or something similar. 0 chance I would pay my own money for the experience or food.

Their same site revenues were down 9% last year. That’s not good. And my fear is over time they start to attract a customer base you don’t want in your neighborhood (see Memphis for an example).
The Top Golf here is located in a very nice, booming area, but there's no guarantee that it won't be infiltrated by those other than having a golf-themed party - meaning, those who are there just to cause trouble. That's one reason the shopping mall at the same location closed and was razed.

Just got back home. Was a good time. Like I said , I’m not a golfer. On my last swing, she went straight and long. Hit inside white ring, bounced to net, rolled back down inside white ring. Almost made me add some more minutes!

Friday , 18th hole, par five, third shot was five feet from the hole. Watched the other three par, bogey, double. Tapped it in for a bird. It’s called comeback golf. The golf gods torture you for 16-17 holes and then let you do something spectacular on the last hole or two so you’ll come back for more torture.

It's like mini-golf for drivers and long irons, with really expensive food, drink and hourly rates.

When they opened the one in Lone Tree, CO about a decade ago, we had a bunch of work functions there and some industry happy hours, etc. I did a firm team-building thing there once. I haven't been in at least 6 years.

It's not for golfers, but it's not really for non-golfers either because it appears to require the skill of having a decent swing. So, other than the once/year and tourist people, it doesn't have a constituency.

Top Golf is very fun. My MSU Jr. ChemE and I go a good bit. We play against each other on the British Open course and other US courses. We truly enjoy it, so the cost to play is irrelevant.

I went to a work outing once and just joined a bunch of Indian fellas I didn’t know well. I ended up driving 2 balls into the basket at the far wall for a couple of perfect scores. I had no idea what I was doing, I was
Just driving…. But I became a cult hero with it the local IT circle!! And if I had any idea what the objective was, I’m confident I’d have never hit the target….
