Interesting writeup in The Athletic:

"Big Ten’s Slate Demands Re-Evaluation

Dochterman: We need more early-season thrills

Last weekend, Big Ten teams faced five Power 5 opponents, and all five of those games were on the road. While the league’s 2-3 record against similar opponents was disappointing, the real concern is the impact on the league’s media rights partners."

NBC carrying Charlotte v. Maryland was a head scratcher. The Ohio State game would have been a better choice. Even with Michigan playing UNLV, ratings on a national channel were solid.
They have OSU coming up on the 23rd against ND as part of their ND package.

Details aren’t widely known but there’s always an order of selection between networks for games and possibly limits on how many times a school can be selected so that might come into play as well.

Are you saying they don't follow the BTN network formula of putting tOSU on 50% of the time? 😂

Well I think BTN just gets the leftover games. The other partners may have limits on how often they can select a team in a season but hard to know for sure because the details and clauses for these selections can be cumbersome from what I’ve read and aren’t really known.

Other than 1 outlier I don't think so. It beat Purdue - Va. Tech which was shown on ESPN2.
Comparing ratings isn’t always easy because of apples to apples.

Broadcast vs cable (even then I don’t think SECN and ACCN are either released or measured, BTN didn’t until recently)

Also exclusive window vs a window with competition and what was the competition.

As mentioned above Purdue game had a long delay and was moved to ESPN news. I think maybe just online for the 2nd half because I couldn’t find it anymore after halftime.

Those numbers aren't bad for being placed on the secondary BTN channel. 20th highest rated game of the week week for Rutgers vs Temple isnt bad at all.

This is a driver.

BTN had 2 games on at the same time and here in the MW it was on BTN alternate so it was a split audience.

Not bad at all. And this will be our 2nd lowest rated game of the season ahead of only Wagner.
Look for this week’s rating to be much bigger.. even with the BS BTN overflow channel issues.

Come on. You basically have to toss TV viewing for this game out the window. For whatever reason, it wasn’t even on the regular B10 channel in most parts of NJ. Casual fans are not searching to find the overflow channel. No chance.
absurd move by BTN

My understanding is the Big Tem's partner TV networks "draft" games at the beginning of the season. IDK how the football games draft works - or even if it applied this past weekend, but it is a thing in the new TV deal.

absolutely stupid move and have to believe it was intentional. That would be a bad oversight
If it was intentional, I can’t even imagine what the rationale was. There are probably more Temple alum in NJ that might casually tune into the game flipping through the channels if they saw their school was on, than the total number of NJ residents who would have any interest in that Minny game.
