Why do these seem to happen in bunches?
That rail line is one of the busiest in North America. They are constantly working on it so it is surprising to see two derailments. The one at Prichard happened in a curve and looked like the rail csme off one side.

What’s wild is they had it cleaned up and completely repaired in 36 hours and it tore up almost a quarter mile of track.

Fun fact, if you go to the MS Grand Canyon (Red Bluff near Columbia), there's several train cars left over from a derailment many years ago (when you get to the bottom turn right and follow the tracks a hundred yards or so, the cars are on the left between the tracks and the Pearl).

That looks awful. Did the heat cause the tracks to warp? I know that can happen when it’s really hot, no idea in this particular case.

No that’s from the rails tweaking from the weight of the train cars coming off the rails.
It looks like all the crossties slid over and down the hill together with the tracks - is that what I'm seeing? I've never seen that before, or maybe I just haven't noticed it. That seems almost impossible unless there was a failure in the structure of the hillside or something.
