I would venture to say that a lot of us on this board grew up dreaming of being a Wildcat, so when we see a Kentucky kid actually have an opportunity to achieve that dream, we’re all rooting for him.
Perry is certainly no different in that regard, and I really hope he proves me wrong, but I’m not quite as bullish on him as a lot of you seem to be. His size is going to be a liability at any position except point guard in a league like the SEC, and he doesn’t have the ideal quickness and agility for a smaller guard either. Maybe he can work really hard and get a little better with his movement, but for the most part, that’s something you’re either born with or you’re not, so he’s probably always going to be at an athletic disadvantage.
That pretty much leaves him needing to have elite skills and IQ to contribute, and it’s just not there yet. He wasn’t really point guard in high school, and it showed, putting up more turnovers than assists this year. Maybe by his junior or senior season he can get enough experience to at least be steady enough that it’s worth giving him some minutes to hope he knocks down some 3s, but I wouldn’t say it’s a foregone conclusion. I don’t want to sound too harsh because I really di want all of our players to do well, but I just don’t see him ever being the kind of player at this level of college ball that he was in high school.
