The extension by itself constitutes dereliction of duty. And yogurt's wagon is now firmly hitched to the backward hat wearing turd.

Grade: F af

The sword swings for both yogurt and the turd at the conclusion of the 2026 season at the latest.

Honestly, not enough evidence so far to come to a conclusion on Dannen. The entire CFB world was bent over a barrel by Jimmy Sexton after he made it his personal mission to get all of his clients an extension after Franklin got fired. I imagine the entire AD at NU panicked just like a dozen other ADs with all the job openings. In our case it was a terrible decision given his body of work here. To my knowledge though the extension was written up when we were 5-1 and PSU seemed interested.

I still believe Rhule was in play longer than anybody else on here thinks. That said, there’s no way in he11 I would have extended him. My conspiracy theory still is that PSU’s AD fired Franklin thinking Rhule was headed for a good year. You don’t fire Franklin when he did IF you don’t verbally have your next coach lined up. Who else could it have been?

I also believe that’s why we crapped the bed at Minnesota. I believe IF he had won that game it would have been a done deal. I think Rhule had the extension in front of him before that game and didn’t sign it until after the loss. I also believe it was possible that Rhule was still a possibility until we got embarrassed at PSU. PS was desperate.

F. Wasted 10's of Millions of Universoty $$ on an unearned extention.

Anyone with a brain knew PSU was not hiring Rhule.
What if Penn State would have hired Matt Rhule? We would really be screwed then. They did what they had to do to keep Matt Rhule locked in.

That is totally ********. They wasted Millions and at least 3 years of the same ******** you just saw this year. The best thing that would have ever happened is PSU being dumb enough to hire Rhule.

There are 30 coaches at least that could out perform what Rhule has done at Nebraska. Every coach in the conference would be able to for what Rhule has done more much better. He is not a good coach. He is a short term salesman.

There is this weird idea that there are no good coaches out there.
Lots of good coaches. Very few proven good coaches. We would have either had to wait for Whittingham and outbid Michigan OR rolled the dice on a guy who had never been a P4 head coach. I brought up Vigen at Montana State 3 years ago. Coached at NDSU and then Wyoming with Craig Bohl.

I realize I’m likely in a minority of exactly one in my idea. That’s what my gut tells me though. Most of us underestimate the degree that previous relationships influence hires.
No I think the exact same thing and even believe Rhule was a frontrunner for the PSU job at one point. That is until he got depantsed on national TV by that same school who didn't even have a head coach.

All true. Still doesn’t mean we had to golden handcuff somebody that has never beaten a ranked P4/P5 team, ever.

Look at the athletic dept as a whole. Volleyball best in the country, basketball unbeaten and trending toward a program tourney win or more likely disappointment starting tomorrow night, baseball meh but won the conference tournament 2x, ladies bowling......( those chicks can roll) wrestling is top 5 good , softball huge potential but the sport that pays all the bills is a dumpster fire and trending down

Meh. Cook basically hired Dani. Dannen was in no position to veto what was already verbally agreed to. Just like Dannen wasn’t the only one who signed off on Rhule’s extension. BORs had to approve it.
Yep. The Busboom deal was done way before Dannen. And yes, Dannen listened to certain money boosters to lock in Rhule during the PSU fiasco.

The thing that pisses me off is that Dannen didn't have the balls to say we need to wait until after the regular season and see what the state of the football team is. He wasn't looking out for the best interest of the university, he was only looking out for his own arse. Surely the Minnesota, PSU and Iowa games would have forced a different outcome.

I believe he was a candidate at one point too. My evidence for that is that the extension sat on his desk for about three weeks before he eventually signed it.
